Free enterprise is what makes America great and doing away with the franchise agreements is in the best interest of consumers because what is good for corporate America is good for citizens. We don't need the government telling business what we need and when we need it, that should be left in the hands of the free market. -- Patriots always speak of dying for their country never killing for it. NOVA_GuyObamaCare Kills AmericansPremium join:2002-03-05 | I agree that government should keep out of free markets 100%. However, our definitions of what a free market is may differ.
The classical definition of a free market includes having little to no barrier to entry. I would hardly argue that cable franchises fit this part of the definition. Startup costs, equipment costs, and rebroadcast agreements take considerable time and money to get set up and ready to go.
I would argue that cable franchises are more like oligopolies (at best) and monopolies (at worst), with the average consumer in this country facing something closer to a monopoly than an oligopoly. As such, cable companies need to be regulated to some extent. Without such regulation, consumers would have virtually no power (which, IMO, is really only slightly less than what they have now).
This is one of the few instances in which government, if it isn't mucked up by companies handing out money like candy, can be an effective protector of peoples' rights. Unfortunately in the situations mentioned in this thread it seems like the legislators were taken in by the AT&T/Verizon con game. -- Trusting the Democrats to fix our economy and give us health care is like trusting the fox with keys to the henhouse, a brand new gas stove, and a pantry full of goodies for side dishes. In the end, all will be dead and nothing but lies will be told. |

If you are being serious with this post, then I really think you should up the doses of your medication or maybe stop mixing them with alcohol as they seem to be adversely affecting your vision, mind, and ability to comprehend what is going on around you. |

Yes, and the consumer shouldn't have to sue companies through class actions or go through binding arbitration to get a problem fixed. If these companies had thousands of lawsuits from ticked off consumers, and these companies had to pay for the court costs of ALL these cases, they'd treat them a little better. Yes, free markets is great when it's a level playing field... |
