[netopia] Is anyone good at interpreting Netopia 3347 logs?

Is anyone good at interpreting Netopia 3347-02-1006 (7.6.1r9) logs? I’ve been having an issue with a “new” modem I purchased on e-bay. The internet light on the modem goes red and seems to reset. When I swap the Netopia with my old Speedstream 4100, I get slower screen loads, which is why I wanted to replace it, but it does not reset. Today I had an ATT DSL tech in St. Louis, Mo come onsite to downgrade me from 6mb to 3mb because initial troubleshooting showed my SN Margin at 4db. Now that I’m at 3MB my stats are as follows:

Line State Up
Modulation DMT
Data Path Fast

Downstream Upstream
Max Allowed Speed (kbps) 3008 512
SN Margin (dB) 11.50 16.00
Line Attenuation (dB) 46.00 29.00
CRC Errors 3 2

I just saw the Netopia reset and captured the logs below. I was hoping someone could help me figure out if there’s another network issue or if the modem is new junk. Your help is appreciated.

Re: [netopia] Is anyone good at interpreting Netopia 3347 logs?

This is a really dumb question, but let's ask it anyway: In the Home Page when you are in Expert Mode, under "WAN" > "Connection Type", does it say "Always On"?

If it says "Instant On", try changing it to "Always On" and run the modem for awhile to see if the connection still drops.

No question is dumb. My menu is different, but I found something under "Connection Configuration" that is set to "Connection Type: Always On." On-Demand and Manual are options.

Re: [netopia] Is anyone good at interpreting Netopia 3347 logs?

Well, that eliminates this as a possible problem.

Both the Netopia and the SpeedStream modems are based on a Texas Instruments chipset, although the exact implementation and the firmware are obviously different.

Here's something to consider: In order to have another modem to compare with the Netopia (since the 4100 is suspect), if you have time this weekend, check some flea markets, thrift stores and/or garage sales. Around here, working DSL modems can be found for a dollar or two (I even located one of the very latest 2Wire wireless models for 50 cents a couple of weeks ago). At these prices, even if you end up with a dud or two, you haven't lost much money. Unless it is locked into some ISP, pretty much any ADSL modem can be configured for AT&T, so no worry if you find a modem which says Qwest, Verizon, etc. on it. Because some if them have had overheating issues, best to avoid any Motorola 2210 (silver-colored) modem that you see.

Re: [netopia] Is anyone good at interpreting Netopia 3347 logs?

There’s more to the story. Yesterday, while still using the Netopia modem, I noticed that my SN Margin dropped from 12db to 6db. I called ATT and they changed me from “fast” to “Interleaved.” That bumped me up to 17db. Since then, I’ve not observed any clicking or red lights. Yet, I’m not sure how to tell if it’s resetting when I’m not at the desk. The logs are not showing a big string of activity like those seen above at 4:58, when I know the modem reset. All I’m seeing are a few LDH events, and I don’t know if I should be concerned:
LHD: Interface N/A, State offline
LHD: Interface N/A, State suspect.

After doing a little bit of Google research, I think I know what this means. LHD means LAN Host Discovery. It looks like the modem is reporting on devices connected to it, as the IP addresses match PCs and printers I have. The Modem may be using LHD to “Discover” “Hosts” on my in-house “LAN”. I guess this means my network printer, PCs, etc are all considered Hosts, which seems like a misnomer. I’d think they’d be called clients. I feel a little better about these events, but please correct me if I’m wrong.

Re: [netopia] Is anyone good at interpreting Netopia 3347 logs?

Perhaps your problems are solved, but I would be concerned that the noise margin decreased from 12 dB to 6 dB. There shouldn't be that kind of variation if everything is working OK. Obviously, I'm not there, but it's possible there is something intermittent in your connection.

I would check the line statistics at least once per day (preferably a few times per day), and make sure that the readings are consistent from one check to the next. If you continue to see changes of more than a couple of dB, something isn't right.
