Station Fire expands to 7,500 acres, evacuations begin in Altadena
Mandatory evacuations ordered in La Vina neighborhood

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- An explosive fire that burned through 30-foot high brush and forced hundreds of evacuations continued to grow Saturday, torching 7500 acres in an area that hasn't burned in 60 years, officials said.

As firefighters attempted to get a handle on it, the Station Fire fanned out in several directions while relative humidy remained low and temperatures hovered near triple-digits. Meanwhile mandatory evacuations were ordered in Altadena Saturday morning in the 260-home La Vina neighborhood.

Flames that shot 80-feet into the sky left a plume of smoke visible throughout the Los Angeles Basin Saturday. "If there is a silver lining it's that there is no Santa Ana winds predicted at this point," said Mike Dietrich, incident commander for the U.S. Forest Service.

The flames forced a partial closure of the Jet Propulsion Labratory, officials there said.

"As a precautionary measure, the Laboratory's Oak Grove site has been closed," says a JPL Web site. "will remain closed throughout the weekend except for essential personnel. Non-essential personnel will not be allowed on-Lab.

"If it had enough power to jump the Angeles Crest Highway it could do anything," said Mohammad Mojarradi, 51, a La Canada resident who was watching the fire burn two-blocks from his home on Starlight Crest Drive.

Took these at 7pm from Allen O. Huston Park, Windsor Hills.
Looks like it's getting much worse, What is the current status of this fire? In one of the shots, a flame line from the bottom to the top South face of the mountain is clearly visible. In another, more to the West...behind the "Hollywood" sign (which is barely visible), the flames are very high as I must be 45 or 50 miles away as the crow flies.

147;Station Fire148; Update

(as of August 29, 2009, 5:00 p.m.)

• The “Station Fire” started at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2009

• Approximately 7,000 acres have burned; 5% containment; fire is largely fuel driven; currently no significant winds

• Per instruction from County public safety personnel, the City of La Cañada Flintridge is announcing an immediate mandatory evacuation notice for residences on: Ocean View Blvd. n/o Bristow Dr., including Bristow Dr., Derwood Dr., Manistee Dr., and Highrim Rd.; generally e/o Palm Dr. at Ravista Ln., n/o Vista Del Valle, and w/o Angeles Crest Highway; Greenridge Dr., Forest Green Dr., Ridge Ct., and Starlight Crest Dr. (through address 502); Big Briar Way (off Haskell St.); La Canada Blvd. n/o El Vago St., Donna Maria Ln., Indian Dr., Alta Canyada Rd. n/o El Vago St., Hacienda Dr., Linda Vista Dr., and Alta Canyada Rd. n/o Linda Vista Dr. Residents in these areas are asked to assemble their families and leave the area. An evacuation center is set up at La Cañada High School, located at 4463 Oak Grove Dr., where the Red Cross is ready to receive those coming from the evacuation area. Please heed directions from Sheriff’s deputies and fire personnel to ensure that all residents are able to depart in a safe manner.

• According to Mr. John Velasco of JPL, the Lab will be closed until at least Sunday evening.

• Fire personnel are battling the fires near Ocean View, Alta Canyada, Bay Tree, and the County Club; thus far their efforts are holding and no structures have been lost

• Units for structure protection are in place and will remain and be supplemented as necessary

• 12 helicopters and 6 fixed wing aircraft will be in the air today

• All concerned residents should packed and be prepared to leave if a mandatory evacuation order is issued; La Cañada High School is set up and available to shelter evacuees (30 people have sought shelter); Crescenta Valley and John Muir High Schools are backup locations

• If you and your family are evacuated from your residence or business, please check in with the Red Cross at La Canada High School, even if you will be staying temporarily with family and friends at another location; this will assist in accounting for community members if necessary

• The Pasadena Humane Society is available at La Canada High School for pet care/shelter

• Evacuees may not return to their homes until their area has been released by fire personnel. The City will alert all residents that they may return to their homes as soon as that information is received from fire personnel

• Please assist fire personnel by refraining from entering fire impacted areas. Cars and crowds may be obstacles to fire efforts

• As a precautionary measure, residents are reminded to use water judiciously particularly in areas that are not adjacent to the fire risk. You cooperation will ensure that there are ample water resources available for fire suppression efforts

• Review your individual preparedness plan and continue to monitor local news and this website for updates

• 164 homes have lost electricity in the Country Club area, Donna Maria Ln. and Fairmount Ave. No timeframe for restoration as SCE cannot enter this area due to fire danger.

• The City will continue to notify residents via its reverse 911 system with critical public safety information (calls to land lines only)

Please return to the City’s website for updates on the Station Fire, on the hour. Next update – 6:00 p.m.

fortunately, they'll either be carrying their own guns, or will have pilfered a few along the way.

said by L.A. Times--> »news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090831/ts_···ires_115 :
Two firefighters die in growing LA wildfire

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, California (Reuters) – The five-day-old wildfire burning out of control in the Los Angeles foothills and forest claimed its first victims on Sunday, two firefighters whose vehicle plummeted off the side of a road.

The fire scorched 7,000 more acres since day break for a total burned area of 42,500 acres. The flames threaten 10,000 homes and are encroaching on the region's telecommunications nerve center. At least 18 homes have been destroyed.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger rushed back from Sen. Edward Kennedy's funeral to survey the state's worst fire, warning residents to heed evacuation orders for the "very dangerous" blaze.

Flames could be seen stretching 15 miles above the heavily populated foothills, where an estimated 2,000 homes were under evacuation. Smoke mushroomed into huge clouds, some 20,000 feet high and visible from hundreds of miles away.

"What we have seen today was extreme fire behavior once again," Fire Commander Mike Dietrich said. "But there were excellent saves made in the foothill communities, some darn good firefighting."

The two dead firefighters were from Los Angeles County Fire and had been working deep in the Angeles National Forest Sunday afternoon when their vehicle careened down a slope.
