said by denb45 :said by Gbcue :said by signmeuptoo : You mean I can't just activate it online or over the phone in an automated capacity like say, credit cards? A physical person has to do all the work? No wonder they're tanking. If you already have a unactivated SXM radio, you can go on-line and activate that radio, without any phone CSR, but, all they are offering is a 3 month plan for $38.83 for that 3 months, after that you could always cancel it, just take the credit card out (the one you used and put in a invaild one that they cannot use), so they cannot charge you again, but, before you do this, make sure you cancel the subscription before it expires, are they will re-charge your credit card again for an additional 3 months So how much is that total for a weekend? I only want to listen to it if I have an upcoming road trip or such.
I don't need 3 months for $40! That's more than $10 a month! I don't want to spend $40 for a couple days.
I don't know if it's activated or an unactived radio. It's one built into my car radio as standard equipment. -- My BLOG! Black Friday Ads |

So you would rather spend $7 for 3 days then $20 for 5 months? You would rather spend $70 a month? Thats what $7 is for 3 days.
If you dont want to spend the money dont get the service. Simple as that. |

Like with a bus pass, you can get a monthly pass, weekly pass, or a 3-day pass. You can get a one month plan, but, you'll have to ask for that, it's not listed in any of there plans, however I do know for a fact that month to month plans do exist, but you have to call them and ask.....XM EVERYTHING is $12.95 and SIRIUS EVERYTHING is $12.95 a month, that's a lot less than $20.00 and THIS is for the original OP........listen, you need to call them, and ask, complaining back & forth in the forum really isn't gonna get you what you want..........the squeaky wheel always get's the oil, if you know how to ask for what you want -- AMD Phenom X3 8400 Triple-Core 2.1 GHz*6 GB* RAM*Windows Vista Ultimate(64-bit)SP2 |

| reply to Gbcue Bottom line is, you CANNOT have XM for three days. They don't offer it, it's not worth their time to offer it, not many people want that type of service, etc. If you really want XM, shell out the $20 mentioned above and enjoy the service for the months paid-for while you make short-distance drives too. Otherwise, do what the rest of the nation does:
Use the tuner on your radio.
Bring along CD's.
If your radio has an input jack for an MP3 player, load one up with whatever music you like (which you can download from various net radio stations if you want), plug it in and use that.

| reply to signmeuptoo said by signmeuptoo :Now seriously: For the cost of setting you up and the amount of work that the agents have to put forth, you think selling the service for just 3 days makes sense? It certainly doesn't make business sense. I understand what you're saying, but if their stock price is any indication, their agents aren't exactly being overworked right now.
Offering a three-day subscription probably isn't worth their time, but it's obvious that they need to do something to boost their subsciption numbers. Sort of now-ish.
They are about a half-step away from being de-listed and that doesn't bode well for a company. -- Damascus, Aurens.

| Oh c'mon people, this is beyond silliness. Even though I am pretty hard on businesses for their methods and ethics or lack of, this is just too silly.
Selling service for 3 days is a joke. If they did things that way, I'd be mad at them for loss leading!

I myself have doubts that it would be a driver for growth, but your assertions that it would have some huge cost associated with it makes no sense. I bought an XM radio and installed it, created an account and activated it online without any "agents" involved. | It's self evident. If you can't think of why, I can't help you.
A lack of 3 day subscriptions is NOT why XM/Sirius is struggling.
Do you go the Denny's and order a super slam breakfast and then tell them you only want an egg?
They used to make it possible to sample the service online for a few days for free. I think they stopped doing that and I can understand why.
I am not an economics major, I went to college for physics, but I sure can understand why they won't do it.
Bill, are you trying to say that there is no cost involved in online signups? Do you really think that? -- Join Teams Helix and Discovery. Put that fancy computer to good use helping to find a cure, your mom will love you for it. »Team Helix »Team Discovery |

1 edit | reply to Gbcue said by Gbcue :said by way2evil :said by Gbcue :I don't want to pay $20. I don't need it for 5 or 6 months. I just need it for 7 days tops. Really, 3 days. You aren't getting two free trials. If you dont want to pay $20 get an iPod. This is the mentality that gets companies like XM near bankruptcy. I don't know about that.
When you go to the grocery store and beak in half a dozen eggs and try and buy only a dozen, the store might let you do that, but the remaining 1/2 dozen eggs will sit there an never sell on time
You are accusing XM/Sirius as having some sort of mentality, some attitude that is perhaps unbusinesslike. Well, no offense, but my dealings with XM have been good. In fact, they replaced my radio when it dies as a good gesture to retain me as a custmer.
I don't think it is bad customer service to not provide use of the signal for just a few days. I think being angry with them over this is kind of unrealistic.
Have you ever ordered 1/2 of a Burger King Whopper?
XM/Sirius has probably done studies on what plans and marketing is most likely to be effective.
If I was in charge of the company I would provide you with a week's worth of activation for free with limitations in a goodwill gestrue so that you could try it out.
But, Gbcue, you can't assume that you know whether or not the cost versus benefit considerations for providing just 3 days of service.
If you call them and be really sweet to them, they might give you a free month or three for free, they've done so for me.
I hope you succeed in getting it, I like the service. Some of the channels are gone that I loved, but I still use the heck out of the service. There is no time frame, you can run your radio 24/7 and the bill is the same.
May I please add: I hope no one is offended by my direct manner of comunication here. I am not a pro corporate person, truth to tell, I am a progressive and I am often the first to critisize how a business conducts itself.
I got XM because of word of mouth. I too cannot afford much, and when I say cannot afford I really mean it.
I don't see how billing, say, 10 dollars for 7 days of use wouldn't do actual damage to the ecomonics of this merged company. The next thing you know, droves of people would stop monthly/trimonthly/annually subscribing and only order the service at the actual moments they would use it. That would be devastating to XM/Sirius.
XM has costs that are sidnificantly greater than FM radio stations.
If the cost of a meal is what is between the OP'S desire to have XM for a few days, why not skip the meal and live with one month, we're only talking a little bit of money. Just a few dollars. Now, if money is THAT tight, well I know how that is, I am there. But for me I have no wheels, I live in the middle of nowhere in a tiny town with no cable tv, and too many trees for satellite TV. Actually, the smog coming out of the fossil plant here churns white smoke and water vapor thick enough that it often gets in the way of the satellite feed
For me, if XM goes under I will be sort of devastated. No radio station reaches us here except weather radio.
GBCue: Why not call XM and ask them if they will let you sample the service for a few days. | I know how the service is, I had it for 90 days for free when I bought this new car.
The metaphor is more like this: You bought a subscription plan to BK for 1 whopper a day for the next 30 days. Now you only want a few days to eat whoppers...
All grocery stores I go to have half-dozen eggs already sitting broken in half. I routinely buy those because I, as one person, don't eat that many eggs (mostly used for cooking). There are literally a half dozen crates of half dozen egg cartons. -- My BLOG! Black Friday Ads |

I'm guessing you've never worked retail, but my own experience is that consumers (and geeks in particular) are perfectly susceptible to going apeshit over some near-worthless item you throw at them because, hey, it's free (or low cost).
As I said in my post, offering a piffling three-day trial may not be what's needed here. But it's painfully obvious the satellite radio folks aren't selling their service very effectively.
