Re: It's time to shut down UseNet anyway.

Seem like an odd attitude from someone who has "uncensored BBS" in their tag. I'm confused, are you FOR censorship, or AGAINST it?

Regardless, if anyone ever DOES post something significant on Usenet you'll miss it, FIOS-boy!

He would be against censorship if he advertises an uncensored bbs.

What's confusing about that?

"FIOS boys" can still READ all the usenet they want through a large variety of free usenet servers, and some of the free ones also allow posting.

Then there is Google groups, which allows you to search through all the TEXT usenet groups available.

Last but not least, one can purchase a paid account.

Poor people just wanting to read usenet and post messages... really aren't getting hurt by this.

Those who want to download lots of binaries though... might.

It's only censorship if someone's otherwise free speech is removed against their will. I am only asserting that the cost and effort of maintaining UseNet far exceeds any benefits it still delivers. As long as there are people out there who are willing to sift through petabytes of spam in order to get to what little actual content remains, there will be niche providers out there willing to provide the service.

Really? One would think that a 25 Mbps Internet connection would be enough to visit NNTP servers all over the world all day long.

In all seriousness, Usenet is important precisely because it is one of the few ways to get information out in a widespread manner while maintaining anonymity. Whistleblowers, political dissidents, and conservatives (just kidding) don't have many ways to protect their identity while exposing injustice and corruption.

So, yes, even though the channel is filled with a lot of chaff, it is worth protecting. It is quintessential "free speech" where anyone can say anything they want without fear of reprisal from governments. (Yes, sad to say, even ours.)

There's very little doubt that the socialist regime currently in power in the US should not be trusted. They are one scary bunch of extremists.

For the publishing of dissident speech, though, I'm not sure I'd want to rely on a Usenet server operated by The Phone Company.

That vast majority of "Usenet servers" aren't operated by any phone company...
