Never used it

I've been on the intenet for 10 years now and have never used a newsgroup. Not really sure what the purpose is for one now anyways.

I've been on the Internet for almost 30 years and back in the day, Usenet was a force all its own

I did use the newsgroups in the past, but only in a limited way and only the text-based newsgroups that I was interested in. I did not subscribe to binaries.

Well I'm sure 20-30 years ago it was almost a necessity if you wanted information

It was really big until the mid 90's, then it went down hill quality-wise. I think it started going down hill when AOL started giving free Usenet access to their subs.

It still continues to be a viable alternative to torrents.

The internet started going downhill when AOL gave full access to it to its subs.

Back in '87 (as a young engineer at AMD) we were downloading pr0n from usenet. CRP'ing on to other peoples' terminals and flashing up the pictures.

UUdecode for the world!!

Yes, as you were taught WWW and its all you know.

I use Usenet, Archie, Telnet, FTP, and a bunch more. You are missing more than just the kitchen sink.

It helps if you know how to quote, otherwise attempted humorous or put-down replies just lose their impact and gas out.

I found Usenet not long after I got online and still use it today. It is one of the few places on the Internet many less technical users have never found and it is kind of nice that way. I've been on a premium usenet account off and on for over 10 years, so I guess I never noticed if my ISP dropped support or not.
