Re: Poor planning Simple - the AMPS/TDMA hole.
Before they decided on GSM, there was a HUGE amount of Legacy AMPS/TDMA @ 850. Since TDMA was compatible with AMPS this was not a problem. GSM is incompatible with both, so you basically had to run 2 networks , TDMA/AMPS and GSM. With limited spectrum that was tough to add 3G in 850 as that's where TDMA lived.
Once they were able to tun off TDMA/AMPS, they could upgrade to GSM/3G at 850.
Fortunately, the upgrade from AMPS for CDMA was largely plug and play. The upgrade path is a little easier for them. to go from AMPS/CDMA to 3G.
It will get better for AT&T going forwarg as GSM 3G is all compatible and TDMA/AMPS is DEAD! | | en102Canadian, eh? join:2001-01-26 Valencia, CA | Don't forget.. 3G 850MHz equipment wasn't available nearly as early as 3G 1900MHz. Many 'original' equipment may have been updated to add 850MHz radios after 1900MHz because 1900MHz was initially available in both spectrum and equipment. -- Canada = Hollywood North | |
