 froggy no jump

Three times this summer my ADSL has gone dead, a solid strong signal at the hardware level but a failure to authenticate and procure an IP address from Frontier. Three times the problem was fixed without them coming to my home and doing anything but some magic mystery fix back at the mother ship. Three times I went thru the help desk and their script of drag out the original 3COM 812 router from the closet because the New Egg sourced Netgear is not from them, unplug all the wires, plug them all back in, which lights are on/off, power on, power, off, Gee I never worked on one of these 3COMs before, don't you want us to give you one of our crippled routers and charge you every month for the privilege?, don't you want to sign up for home wiring protection before we send out a tech.. and charge you big bucks per hour, and it is 9:30AM, we can schedule you for 5pm today but the tech will be gone for the day by then so he will really look at the trouble tomorrow around noon. This is getting very very old. I work from home and every time you take me out you prevent me from doing my job, paying my bills (your bill) and I look very stupid. Please fix the damn thing instead of doing a power on reset, reseating the card, or whatever... and I'd sure like to hear what was actually fixed. I'm an FCC licensed card carrying techie with decades of networking background going back to twisted pair, token ring, and coax.... so come on guys... one more time and I'm pulling the plug on data and voice and heading to higher ground.

I've seen this happen before with my DSL connection. It happened two years ago and I had no internet for a day and Frontier wound up fixing it that evening. I believe there was a packet loss issue going on in Middletown if I'm not mistaken (I'll have to check). One thing I have noticed with my connection is that unlike the Verizon connection that can maintain a single IP connection for months on end (I held one IP for a half a year before), the Frontier connection does seem to get a new IP once every two weeks to a month due to the PPPoA Authentication server apparently going down during the middle of the night for a few seconds. Of course I was practically the first customer to get hooked up for DSL in my area (back when my line ran at 1Mbps/128kbps, which was low as they were still setting up the network in 2003-2004 before they boosted me to 3Mbps/384kbps where I currently sit at now after the network was seen as solid), so I'm sitting on Frontier's old equipment anyhow.

Just before dinner tonight (Sept 19,2009) I was checking e-mail, everything seemed fine, went out back to grill a steak, finished dinner, went back over to the computer and DSL was dead. SAME FAILURE AS THE LAST THREE TIMES. Router will not authenticate with the mother ship. I'm on dial up for the last four hours. I've really had it with Frontier/Citizens. Time to look at the local alternatives. I work from home and their inability to fix something right after four failures has had a serious impact on my ability to VPN into work when I need to.
Shame they fired too many people qualified to fix this stuff right the first time. That is what happens when you fire people to raise your profits.

Sorry to hear about that. Do you have Cable Internet available to you? If you do, ask around to see how it is.
