DOCSIS 1.1 can't do symmetric 5 Mbps.
Anything longer than about 2500 feet on DSL can't do 5 Mbps symmetric.
I don't even think WiMAX can do 5 Mbps symmetric.
Actually I think 1.1 could barely squeeze out 5 sem. DOCSIS 2 for sure (which is what most cable cos are at, at the moment), and it would be a cheesy walk-in-the-park for DOCSIS 3 to achieve.

As for DSL, yes they would need to put more RTs... but isn't that what most DSL cos are already in the process of doing anyway considering a larger portion of their POTS customers were too far from a CO/RT to begin with?

As for wireless it may not really be a competitor for a few years yet until the tech catches up.

Call me a corporate communist, but that's setting the bar too high at this point. Once we can get low-latency 3 Mbps down, 768k up service to 95% of the US via at least two methods of broadband service, then we can work on 5 Mbps symmetric.
Call me a progressive, but setting the bar at it's lowest is not going to help us become leaders of anything in the world. Technology least of all. So when many other countries are rolling out 1gb/s service you will think it is time for us to move the bar to 5mbs/1mbs service?

5/1 is fine. 5/5 is a bit of a reach. Looks like WiMAX can do 5 Mbps up. DOCSIS 1.1 can't realistically. DOCSIS 2+ can, but DSL beyond about 2000 feet from the VRAD can't.

Not really. I have a 10/1.5 here and I could do fine with a 5 download, but my connection strains and sometimes drops under strain when I upload a lot such as doing online backups or even when someone starts sending a lot of photos to flickr or facebook. Suddenly the download speed drops and ping goes through the roof. I think a 5/5 would work wonders though.

5/5 would work wonders but AT&T can't do it over VDSL while also doing TV and phone. I'm with you on 5 Mbps uploads; my 22/5 connection is a lot better as far as congestion goes.

That's my whole point: should we just give in and keep the bar low just because some companies are using a technology that has issues with it? Any company can deploy fiber, just cause some don't want to does not mean we should lower the bar for them. I am about 3000 feet from a CO and my modem synced at about 8/8 on old ADSL before (even though I was limited to 3/512 or something similar).

You're assuming that a company would change their deployment strategy based on higher numbers, an assumption that I wouldn't make.

I never said the companies ARE GOING to change or assumed and change in their deployments, but I will certainly push for this as the definition the FCC uses. Nothing will get done unless you actually tell your congressmen/women what you would like done.
