The modem rental fee used to be $5 when Internet service was first introduced. That's why I bought my own modem. A few years later (about 6 or 7 years ago), they raised the Internet rates from $39.99 to $42.99, but lowered the rental fee to $3. So people renting were hit with a $1 hike, while people who bought their modem, like me, were hit with a $3 rate hike.

Now that I'm forced to rent their eMTA, since you can't buy one, they're going to stick it to me again.
I have the eMTA and a RCA modem!

My understanding is that if you have both (and they both come from Comcast) they still just charge you one fee.
