Bad lag all of a sudden - Jonesboro, AR

Location - Jonesboro, AR.

In my case, something seems to have happened a few days ago. No problems playing online games or watching videos at all for over a year... then all of a sudden online games lag every 5-30 seconds for a few seconds (sometimes knocking me off with a 'lost connection to server' error), and the majority of youtube (and other) videos now buffer every few seconds causing herky jerky playback.

Downloads appear to be somewhat normal... i downloaded a 500MB file today and it came in at 130ish Kb/sec for the majority of the time i watched it... although i did notice it drop down in speed for 10-15 seconds a few times.

I reloaded a fresh install image of my operating system, same results. bypassed my wireless router and went straight into the pc from the cable modem, and same results.

One thing i noticed, which may be totally unrelated... for 2 consecutive nights just before i started having the problems, the cable modem lost connectivity for about 10 minutes around 1:00AM... tried resetting it and still didn't work... waited a little while and it came back online. don't know if that is a sign of anything... just including it as FYI.

I believe something happened external to my pc, because i had no problems whatsoever gaming and now it is virtually unplayable (along with the annoying slow buffering vids). Josh, i'm going to send you an IM as i saw you offered to help in another thread... if you can't work on it (or if someone else wants to offer help) just let me know.

Thanks guys!

Lots of things can cause issues like that. Bad modem, ingress on the line (outside signal interfering) Damaged cable lines, low mer, or a ber of less than 1 e -7. Or it could just be that the particular node that your on is experiencing heavy traffic. You need a tech to come out and take a look at it.

You can still do that if you want to. But it wouldn't hurt to have someone come take a look and make sure everything is ok.

I also am having the exact same issue as you! About a week ago I was playing Resistance 2 online and my connection dropped. Called tech support and they said they were doing maintenance in Jonesboro at the time. Ever since my service came back it has been spiking like mad; my games lag randomly and the connection drops. I have to reboot the modem everytime this occurs and it's getting really annoying. Tech support tried to tell me it was one of my routers causing the problem, so I connected the PS3 directly to my modem and was still having the issue. My pings and traceroutes prove that my connection is spiking like crazy. I provided copies of my pings and traceroutes to the Tech Support rep, and he was going to have a technician come out to my place - this was Wednesday afternoon. No technician on Wednesday. On Thursday I called back to see when the tech was going to be here and he said he is on the schedule for that day - no one came Thursday or Friday for that matter. Now it's Labor Day weekend and I can't game! The only other highspeed internet available in Jonesboro is AT&T DSL which is only like a 1MB download and 256kb upload. I am getting extremely upset with this whole scenario. It may just make me relearn to enjoy the outdoors and completely go Internet free soon... I'm just sick of shooting someone, having them run around the corner and a few seconds later, explode then die, giving me the xp for killing them 10 before... that, or completely disconnecting me.

would like to publicly thank JoshN for his help here. I contacted him through pm and he ran several tests for me... when it didn't solve the problem, he set up an appointment with a tech. Tech came out and installed something that bumped the tx level up on the modem.... everything looks like it is back to normal now!

Really appreciate your help Josh!

A splitter more than likely glad it's working better.

well, i had put a new splitter on the line... a 3.5db loss one and it came off of the main drop to the house straight to the modem. he did replace it though, because it wasn't the type suddenlink uses. but he said it was showing 30 something on the tx still and he put a pad (sounded like thats what he said) in the wall-outlet and that bumped it up to mid 40's. didn't look to see what it was he put in the wall.

thx tho, it totally cleared the issue up. was getting lag spikes every 30 seconds or so on games (and kicked every so often as well)... had zero probs since he was out.

Technicians do have a pad that they can use to lower the return signal. Sounds like he used a 10 pad which lowers it by 10 db. Docis says 35 to 55 dbmv is a good return signal level. So that's what he was aiming for.
