Re: Opt-out process to just flipping a switch - NOT

said by R4M0N:

Now you're just nitpicking... What is under Comcast's control is taken care of by simply flipping a switch... Or you can use OpenDNS and not worry about any of this.

It is a little more than flipping a switch. The wait time is much less, but you must still reboot your router & or PC to pick up the changes after restarting your cable modem. You can not just go to the portal and opt-out and the process is completed.
It isn't nitpicking to point out that the ARS news item failed to mention that the opt-out does not take place immediately like they implied just by choosing an option. The actual opt-out only takes place after the cable modem is restarted or after its lease is renewed and after the router/PC is rebooted.

Maybe you understand that, but there are plenty of people who would read that news item or read this BBR story who won't understand that.

A way to easily fix that would be to have a message appear that says to restart the cable modem, router, and PC after the user has made the selection.

And I think it's only fair to ask the user to make a selection at the time of initial service activation instead of making the choice for them.

By that same token, anyone savvy enough to be bothered by DNS redirection (or even know that it's happening) would be savvy enough to know about DNS leases and how to refresh/renew them after "flipping the switch".
