 | How to boost my speed with verzion 720 wireless modem? First let me say this is a wireless modem, not DSL as there is no DSL service in my area. I'm using a home computer not a laptop The computer is just a year old with Window's Vista, 2.6ghz, quad core.
How I got a good signal, but with a hassle. I bought a 15ft usb cable, and ran it outside to the roof. I then plugged the Verzion modem into the usb cable. I put a plastic bag over the modem to protect it from the elements. I got three bars on the connection {one less bar from having all bars}.
Ive had to move the modem to the other side of the house {my wife wants to use the television again}. The usb cable is too short, and 15ft is about the limit for the modem to work, even with two usb connection adapters.
I bought an antenna adapter, and Verizon antenna, and ran it outside and onto the roof, and now I have dropped a bar of signal connection. I have thought about buying more antenna cable, and a bigger antenna than the crap that Verizon sells.
Can anyone give me a link on how to change towers? I know I did this over the phone once with a Verizon tech, but I would like to be able to do it myself with something in writing to refer to as I do it. Also, is there any other way to tweak the signal?
thanks, and sorry for the long post. |

 | Read my posts after you go to Jim in Va website & read all of his info .
A coffee can antenna may be all you need.

 | I did read the website, but was unable to find the connection manager, from the directions below from said site.
"Go into the connection manager menu and change to EVDO only mode (HDR for Verizon) - that will tell the modem to only connect at the fastest speed (no roaming). If you don't have a EVDO capable tower nearby then no connection will be made. Turn this mode off when traveling."
I did a test on speedtest with the sever in Atlanta, 50 miles away, and got a ping of 98, a download speed of .5, an upload of .35
I did the test again with a server in Jackson TN, 300 miles away, and got a ping of 85, a download speed of 1.54, an upload of .56
How can I change the modem to the server in Jackson, or is this even possible? |

 | Jim has a lot of info about EVDO on the site. It just takes time to read and read again.
You can access the diagnostic mode of the VZAccess Manager software by pressing CTRL-D and entering the password diagvzw. You need to be disconnected to enter areas that are grayed out. From the Diagnostic screen you can put the modem in HDR Only mode which locks in EVDO speeds. »evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/10/mi···ger.html
Look near the bottom of the diagnostic screen that is where you will find the signal strength and other tower info for EVDO. »evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/03/de···ned.html
With the aid of a directional antenna you should be able to select the cell tower that produces the best speeds. »evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/10/pa···nna.html »evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/02/go···wer.html
You will need to find out what frequency band Verizon is using for EVDO in your area and buy the correct directional antenna. »evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/11/85···mhz.html |

 | Thanks for the info.
One last question, sometimes my connection will keep disconnecting over, and over.
I think part of the problem is the long {15ft} usb cable, but some days its really a hassle........thanks again. |
|
 | Could be the USB cable, some devices work well with long cables and some have problems. More likely the EVDO signal level changing is the real reason you have disconnects. With a strong clean signal you should have a more stable connection. |
|
 | Also, you are right about the EVDO signal changing all of the time. I can see the problem well when I play Call of Duty 4 online. After each game it show's your score as well as your ping, and the ping of all of the other players.
Ive sat, and watched my ping go from 121-198-88 within a few seconds.......... |

 | reply to xrayman thanks for the advise xray. However, I tired all Sunday to load the program on the link for the device manager, and I got a message
"unable to load as there is another version of Version on this computer. Remove old program and try again".
So, I removed all of the old Version program and rebooted the computer. Then I tried to load the new program, and got the same message about their being another version on the computer.
This time I disconnected the usb cable and rebooted the computer and tried to install the program again, but same message....................Im stumped. |
|
 | reply to xrayman I finally figured out how to get the old program removed. I had disabled a "window's installer", which didn't allow me to use the remove programs {oh, how I miss Window's XP}.
Anyway, I got the old program removed and installed the new program, and got everything corrected thanks again for all of your help, and patience. |
