Whatever.

Those two threads (plus this one) prove that there is a problem that should be somehow solved.

The problem was described in most concise way by Nerdtalker in this post:

said by Nerdtalker:

The thumbs-up thing is supposed to be an encouragement; it does no good and doesn't serve its purpose if the recipient never even finds out about it.

I think the reason why those proposals failed is simple. They both used "a big gun" - IM or a "system message". And I see the point and actually share opinion of those who don't want to get IM or system notifications. It could be a way too annoying...

But because the problem obviously exists - let's find out a simple way that doesn't require a big new development, use already widely used common techniques of casual browsing (no any special actions or checking by users should be required here). And when person will get the notification - it should not be annoying at all. Is it not a simple task? Perhaps. But we have to try to find out a solution.

Again, what's wrong with the way I've mentioned in my previous post? Is it too annoying? Will it disturb you if you'll find your post with the new thumb up one more time among other new posts (at the top of the subset)? Or, may be, you don't check new posts by clicking on the blue arrow at all? What's the problem?
--
Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself...

The thread is not about it at all. Should I remove the phrase from initial post? :)

It's rather about the question - do you want the poster, you gave your "thumb up", to ever notice that? I, for example, do. Otherwise, what's the point of giving it at all?

From my experience in most cases, when someone gave me that sign, I DO NOT notice that! That's why I've started the thread. And because I do not want any intrusive way to make such notification - I've proposed the simple way to do it. Most of us click on "new posts available" blue arrow on the right side. What we've got is a subset of posts sent after the last time we checked the thread. After you open that - you'll not get those posts again. Right?

I propose to use that subset feature with very small change. Additionally to the posts you have not seen yet - you may get your post where someone added the "thumbs up" sign. Nothing more and nothing less. It happens once. You'll never see it again, exactly as that subset of "new posts". What's wrong with that?
--
Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself...

I didn't give your post thumbs up, because if you use forum the way I do, there is a big probability that you'll not notice it anyway ;) (we don't have notifications yet), but nevertheless, I appreciate it. :)

I'd agree that using existing IM channel is a bit over the top. Especially for the folks who perhaps get thumbs up a lot ;) I'm not in that category, but I understand this concern.

As I've said before, I'm not checking "votes" page. But I always check latest posts in threads where I've offered my thoughts. So, if next time I check the latest posts there and someone gave me this sing of appreciation - I think it'd be nice to see that particular post on the top of the chain. Nothing more. It will not shout for my attention (as IM or a system messages do), but, at the same time, it will bring my attention that post. The same should apply in opposite direction of cause (when I give that sign to other posts).

May be there is a better and even less intrusive way to do it, but I do not see it at the moment.
OZO posted : Time to time I may suddenly discover that someone gave a kudos to one of my posts. That could make some warm feeling, if you know what I mean :).

I have to say, I'm not looking for kudos specifically and the way how it works now I may easily miss that sign. The same I presume is true with regards to kudos that I give to other posts as well... And I guess the same is true for majority of members too.

Don't you guys think that some kind of notification could help to conduct those small signs of appreciation here?

I do not know how to implement this feature. One of the possible ways could be using the old "new posts available" feature. Usually it flags only new messages to see. But in this case we may make an exception and if there is a post with new kudos given for the user - it may start that chain of new posts for him... I know it's not the perfect way and will somehow interfere with the common chain of new posts that we used to see (the post with new kudos is not "new"), but anyway...

What do you guys think?
