Firefox 3.5.2 add on installed - Weird

I am using vista 64 bit home premium, And well this pc is shared with family. But anyway it's 3am in the morning and my family is sleeping.

I go on the pc and see mozilla add-ons window open with dna plug-in 1.0.0.1 and have btdna.exe running

i have no idea what would even install that...Extremely weird

I don't have bittorrent on my pc. That's the funny part

i just uploaded the .exe and look what was found

Well until someone more capable than I shows up, and since I don't use Vista, I can only make some guesses.

Do the other users of your family run as Admin? My guess is that they do and they shouldn't. If there were different user accounts on the machine, you would probably only see an addon installed on just the user account that was running.(That's one reason to not let them run as Admin!)

However, if you google this, there is an actual program and it is independent of BitTorrent. So I'm guessing one of your kids installed it, whether intentionally or not. Do you see the exec in Add/Remove?

You can find more info here:»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_DNA

The file may be suspect to a few of the Virus Total engines, but those might also be false positives. However, if your kids are just installing things, you might want to do a little further checking..and lock down the machine a little tighter.

btdna.exe can be associated with bit-torrent. In that it is normally then main executable of the program.
The DNA extension 1.0.0.1 is also associated with bit-torrent(TM).
The fact that firefox says it is not "compatable" with ver 3.5.2 points to early release of the accelerator or ff has not got it running for 3.5.2 yet.
Someone has managed to install bit=torrent and not mentioned it. EDIT: or been aware of it (possible bot install included)
Look for the uninstaller in "ADD/REMOVE" or discuss with the family if it is to stay.
If not configured properly you could very well see the contents of your hard-drive available for download. Not to mention, more often than not (figure of speech) the incomming files are packing malware. Your computer may also be spewing out spam or ddos'ing someone.
EDIT 2: added "incomming" and last sentance.

What security programs do you run. How is the download limit going per say. Like has there been an unexplainable increase in download/upload usage. Depending on these variables or not you may wish to go to »Security Cleanup and follow instructions there.

Are you sure that this is true? I use neither Vista nor bitTorrent so I have no way of checking. However, the link I posted indicated the the DNA executable can be installed as a stand-alone independent of bitTorrent. So a verification of Add/Remove should indicate that DNA was installed, and as well whether BitTorrent was installed.

If you read near the bottom of your link, it suggests that they intended to intergrate the program (DNA) into bit-torrent and include a means at which to disable DNA from functioning.
I'm presumming this has just been made available.
AS the O.P. has both the bit-torrent exe and (DNA) i'm assuming bit-torrent or it's functioning shell is installed....yes
EDIT: can't spell your. (2) +s for suggests

Just for reference here is the latest (BitTorrent-6.1.1a.exe) mcafee installer break down.
Looks like "ask toolbar" is included. If it was me that would be gone as well.

Unfortunately it seems that it can be installed in many ways. By viewing a video on a web site or installing software that includes it.

The page is disturbing with

This silent version of the installer does not require the user to agree to a BitTorrent DNA EULA, or present an installer dialog which a user would agree to as part of the application installer.
showing an attitude that the end user does not need to be consulted, while claiming

In each case, end users of BitTorrent DNA MUST agree to the terms of the BitTorrent DNA End User License Agreement (EULA), which may be presented as a separate click-though EULA or as terms that are integrated into an existing EULA. Distribution of BitTorrent DNA without requiring end users to consent to the DNA EULA is a violation of our Terms of Service.
WHY provide a method to install that violates the EULA and does not inform the user.

DNA is now itself a P2P but in a limited form. It is in effect a cut down version of bit-torrent and the btdna.exe includes the bit-torrent function. Sorry for the confusion earlier.
From the bi-torrent web site.

Quote "How does DNA work?

DNA uses the BitTorrent protocol to automatically accelerates your favorite web sites and software by downloading in parallel from multiple sources. During and for a short time after each download, your computer helps distribute what you download. In return, you get faster, more reliable downloads and access to richer content. Only files that you recently downloaded will be made available to others.
How do I get DNA on my computer?

DNA is distributed along with BitTorrent’s popular freeware client as well as other popular downloaded applications and content. For example, you may have downloaded a game that uses DNA to obtain game updates. Whenever DNA is bundled with an application, the installation process explains DNA and its operation."

Basically if you use this service you enable P2P links to other computers and are required to forward part of your download should a request be honoured.

This program i find unacceptable

This happened to me this past week. In the morning the DNA add-on was there. The add-on screen was sitting there. Have no idea how I got it either. Mine was installed and I removed it. I'm using 3.0.13 FF.

I'm sure I updated another add-on such as NoScript before that day. I wasn't sure how DNA got there, it ticked me off that something sneaked in there, but didn't give it too much thought.

Has the DNA program returned?
The add on may have to be added when ff is re-started.
If you uninstalled it using the uninstaller then you should be fine.
If it returns a program you use requires it (i'd remove that instead) or a web site insists on dropping it (have not heard of this but....)

Reinstalling is good from time to time but in this case i wouldn't consider it important.

SERCURITY
The very least you could now is beef up your security.
Installing no-script would be a start.
A clean re-install with something like Deep Freeze...........
