AT&T NDR training exercises

Came across this earlier: »www.corp.att.com/ndr/exercises.html

Its a series of overviews of training exercises that the AT&T NDR team(s) have conducted over the years - with LOTS of pictures.

Looks like quite an extensive setup they have, and very modular.

Judging by the date of some of the exercises you could argue that AT&T invented the shipping container datacentre model.

Its good to see that even during these types of events they still take the time to lay everything out properly and even do some lacing of cables - even though only temporary.

I saw these quite a while ago and almost forgot about them. Some seriously awesome stuff in there.

Probably because you have never seen a CLEC get the money and special treatment like AT&T gets.

It's a pretty cool thing to have but I wonder if they have ever fully deployed that in an real disaster. Maybe after Katrina?

Our one time sister company Falcon Communications does disaster recovery. Not quite to that extent but the have several class 5's in trailers specifically for the purpose. Mainly their system is meant for the smaller telco's that couldn't afford a NDR to the extent that AT&T does. IIRC All their trailers were in use after Katrina.

Thanks for the post. I'll look more when i have more time.

I have been toying with the idea of doing something similar for myself due to the recent fun times with storms. Kind of along the same lines of what they are doing

MaBell has had a disaster recovery component for many many years..

I remember seeing a cord board, or maybe it was a SxS, built into a crate at the old PacBell museum in SF, dating from the 1920's, or maybe earlier.

During the TD2 microwave days (postwar-1980's), they had trailers/trucks with microwave gear, portable towers, etc, ready to replace destroyed relay sites. Sites had pre-plotted site plans for emergency restoration.

Some of these were used after some bombings of Long Lines TD2 sites in Utah and Nevada in 1961.

Why were they wearing SCBAs?

In case they have to enter a hazardous area to fix an issue, they could be and have been called on to work in potently hazardous areas, and if your going to train might as well go all out.

Well they are wearing then for hazmat (biological and radioactive and what not) stuff not really zero vis situations like a fire.

Being a firefighter as well I dont think it would be to hard to do their work in a SCBA compared to without one, although I'm sure would be awkward but doable.
