| [Rant] Best Buy now requires a Drivers License for purchases
My buying days at BB are over, I though that my drivers license was required to drive my car but on a $200 purchase I was "not asked" but told to provide a drivers license. I wasn't writing a check I was using a secure (chip/pin) credit card where you put your card in the secure reader and input a pin and I even offered to pay interact. So unless it's the policy of BB to require a drivers license from everyone on every purchase over $200 then I consider it to be prejudicial profiling.

Not sure as of now but circuit city use to do this. I will not show shit to these stores to buy something. All you have to do is ask the clerk for their drivers license and say if you want to look at or enter any info from my drivers license then I need to see yours so I know who has my info or better yet just tell them to fuck off.

The problem I have with this behavior is that the clerk now has access to my secure code on the back of the card and also my personal home address that's on the Drivers License opening me up to identity theft.
I'll let you know if/when I get a reply from CC |

| reply to Stewy I have seen numerous threads with this discussion....I have also seen more and more companies require a driver's license in order to pay with a credit card so SOMETHING outweighs the credit card agreement enough for all these companies to begin doing it. I have a feeling pretty soon it may be "required" even by the credit card companies since they appear to be ignoring their own TOS. |

| reply to Stewy They do this all the time at Fry's when you pay with plastic. IMO, I have no problem with any retailer asking me for ID whenever I use a credit or debit card. With identity theft and general credit card fraud rampant, I feel that it is a necessary evil.
In fact, I would go so far as to insist that a store I have never been to asks me to see some ID when paying with plastic. Though I do not actually say it.
Now if there is an actual debit card reader and you have to input your PIN (and the transaction is done by you, not the clerk), then they should not be asking for ID. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

Name Address Card Number Secure Code
With a chip and a pin the clerk should not even touch your card. I'm suspecting the reason they do this is to put all your info into their spam database. |

| reply to Stewy I welcome the chance to show an ID. Especially with using a debit card as a CC. I have been a victum of ID theft and it isn't pretty. If you are using a debit as a debit, basically inputting your pin ALMOST assures the store that you are who the card says you are.
My wife had her card skimmed recently, so the theives had the pin and proceded to lighten my account by $1500 before they were stopped. So having a pin is not a guarantee, neither is a photo ID, but it takes away the majority of doubt.
I will show mine anytime I use my card if asked. |

| I thought it was only allowed/called for if you didn't sign the back of the card...
That and yes, I believe if you swipe and enter PIN, they have zero reason to ask for ID.
If card IS signed, and they ask that's another thing IMO, but may still be against strictest interpretation of policy.
Some might say it's only a matter of time before we all get forced to have "the mark" or die. |

| reply to Stewy On the back of my Visa in BIG letters " check ID" and a small signature, I want them to check id when my card is used, or I write a check- I will not however allow them to scan my DL as some stores were doing for a while- they were selling your info and photo to some data base company. Some places still ask for SS# and that I will not give out, I'll leave. |

You would be surprised at how many places do not check the ID.
I will not give out my SS# but I have not been asked for the number in quite a while. |
