| DNS queries failing
For the last week or two I've noticed what appears to be DNS queries failing from time to time on multiple computers on my network. I have a Zyxel 660 modem. I can't figure out whether the servers are hardcoded or dynamically provided by Embarq (can't find that in the menus) but I do see in system status:
Primary DNS:207.14.188.36 Secondary DNS:71.2.28.14
In WAN setup, I do obtain my IP address automatically. My router uses the DSL modem for DNS (the router is also not hardcoded for DNS), and my PCs use the router for DNS.
Are these DNS servers OK? |

| I was having similar problems off and on here at home and also at work. I switched everything to Open DNS and haven't had troubles of that type since. I understand the North Carolina DNS servers were changed last week I think. Not sure of your area but if you are using the "standard" DHCP setup the DNS info will be pushed to your network devices providing you acquire the setting automatically. If you do decide to make a DNS change I have had better results in a networked environment hard coding the server IP's in the router.
Hope this helps!

| I am in Western New Jersey. I reviewed the info about North Carolina and didn't see anything relevant. One of my DNS servers happens to be one of the new NC DNS servers. Perhaps that is the one that works, and the other does not. I am using Embarq default/automatic DNS settings. I understand how to switch to openDNS but would rather leave things simple. |

| The DNS failures continue. They are apparently random, happening on a variety of well known web sites. For example, I'll try to view www.google.com, and firefox reports site not found. I click the "Try again" button and firefox locates and displays the page immediately. |

| said by Hazy Arc :Are you sure it's DNS and not something else, like your DSL losing sync? Good question. No, I can't be certain. It just always seems to fail on first access to a web site. I don't seem to get hung or disconnected mid-stream.
I was hoping it was a common issue (because I wouldn't have to fix it), but maybe it's not. I guess I can change to openDNS as a temporary trouble-shooting move. If the errors continue, I will know I was barking up the wrong tree, and then do more local troubleshooting. |
