Multi Office Solution

The company I work for has acquired 2 additional companies and we want to integrate them into a large WAN.

I've been talking to vendors about an ethernet connection between each office, while my boss is hung up on just using our existing 10mb (one office has a 10mb connection the other a 50/1 connection) to do it, using a open source vpn solution.

I haven't even begun to scratch the service how to make this work, but I somehow I don't think that the (lets put the vpn aside for the moment) that our internet connection is the solution.

My plans are to integrate 1 AD forest and bring the 2nd company into our forest. We would be looking at file sharing, GAL sharing, and who knows what else in the future (maybe everyone migrates into a large exchange organization)

In the back of my head I don't think that the internet is the right solution, (am I wrong?) and that a pure point to point ethernet is the right route, my problem is I can't figure out how justify it (I i need too).

This is all brand new for me (I've always worked a single office environment) so I'm here asking for a little advice.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The companies are roughly 150 and 500km away.

I don't know what is available for what price points in Canada, but here in the states you would justify it with the word "security."

LIke I said, this is new to me, but would security not be my problem?

Or is a concern that the private line gets broken into?

with private lines or MPLS solutions, there is no path from the public into those network facilities. with VPN over the internet, the path is there and it's your responsibility to provide your own security. think of the difference between a brick wall, and a brick wall with a door. VPN over the internet is the wall with a door, and you have to manage the lock and keys.
