jmichna posted : We're not done researching, but it looks like the local teleco (Ontonagon Phone Company) will have the most "cash effective" service with 6mb DSL for $50.95/mo (first 6 months promo $29.95) as opposed to cable service, once you factor in ongoing equipment rental costs the cable company wants.

For TV, looks like the best deal (package for the money) is by Dish Network satellite.

Re "Why Ontonagon?" we've fished, camped and toured the western UP for many years and love the area. Ontonagon's not the end of the World, but you can see it from there.

I was cut loose from my company after 35 years service, in their eighth round of head count reduction over the last 5-6 years. I've had no luck finding a job since March at my age (57). It is too expensive to continue living where we do now. Ontonagon offers a significantly lower cost of living (housing alone is about one-fifth to as little as one-tenth the cost in the Chicago area).

As you mention, the mill is expected to close, however, the mill was shut down for about half a year last year and re-opened. The mill employs about 170 locals. If under current ownership the mill shuts down for good, there are potential buyers looking for a bargain.

Aside from the beauty and serenity of the area, Ontonagon (pop approx 1,800) is the county seat of Ontonagon County (pop. approx 8,000) and offers a good library, an active community theater program, a nice local museum, more than a half mile of public beach on Lake Superior, a good hospital, the county headquarters for the Sheriff's Department, a good school system, and is still reasonably close to Houghton & Hancock and MTU, with all the cultural advantages a university town offers. Ontonagon is less than 15 miles from the Porcupine Mountains State Park and Wilderness Area. It is about a 30 minute drive from a sportsman's club we'll be joining, and about 45 minutes from the casino in Baraga. The town is also within an hour or so of many of the state parks we enjoy camping at (Twin Lakes, McClain, Baraga, etc.).

If I'm going to be unemployed, I may as well try early retirement in an area that is less expensive, and much more beautiful than where we are at now.
--
Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Paulg posted : I imagine you should be able to get cable tv and internet from Charter, maybe even DSL From AT&T.

There is a local ISP that provides Wireless and DSL out of some COs, pasty.net, you may want to check them out too.

The link posted to CMX is a bit misleading, they are not in the Ontonagon area, they're in Houghton, about an hour NE.

OT, but I have to ask.. why are you moving to Ontonagon? It's pretty much the middle of nowhere and the biggest industry, the paper/container plant is shutting down. I don't think there's much left.
--
Guilty or Innocent?
tr6scott posted : Yes, and Chicago is a little more congested than Ontonagon too.

I know she was on dial-up before jamadots, but I do not know what other options may be.

I did a little digging, the local computer guy in town »www.cmxsolutions.biz from »www.ontonagonmi.org/businesses.h···omputers

whois lookup shows he uses dynamic dns to host the site, and the ip address is in a pool of ip's owned by Charter.

So you may want to Check Charter cable and see if the offer cable and internet to where you are at.. Might be an option if you are lucky... I have Charter Cable, only option I have for cable where I live, and they have promised to offer internet service to me, "next year" since 1996. The have it in the town of Oxford, but I am 3 miles west. I have att dsl, and has been rock solid, not sure if I would change now if they ever really offered it.

Good luck with the move.
--
The sooner we get behind schedule, the more time we have to catch up.

jmichna posted : Gentlemen,
Thank you both. I did manage to find jamadots.com for DSL, looks like they are a little pricier than what we are accustomed to in the Chi Town area, but we'll see.

For TV, looks like Dish Network has better packages and pricing than DirectTV; I really don't like the cable packages with the higher ongoing equipment rentals pricing and the installation charges to install in Ontonagon.
--
Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
tr6scott posted : Check out jamadots.com. Cousin uses them in Grand Marias, and they have Ontonagon listed as one of their service points. Don't know much on the other options.
--
The sooner we get behind schedule, the more time we have to catch up.

jmichna posted : Our family will be moving to the UP (Ontonagon, zip code 49953) in a couple months. We've done the standard internet searches for providers, but there just doesn't seem to be much info and virtually no reviews of service in that region. Ontonagon is about a dozen miles east of the Porcupine Mts, and about 50 miles from anywhere else.

We currently use DSL service in the Chicago area and are happy with it, but are open to cable or DSL in our new Ontonagon home.

Unrelated to internet service, our second, somewhat OT, question is TV service (digital and HD)... from what I've found it seems like satellite is a better way to go than cable TV... lower ongoing equipment rental charges and lower service fees.

If anyone can shed any light, offer any opinions, we would be most grateful.
--
Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
