Re: Centrytel/Centurylink has higher speeds

I just signed up for pure BB, should I cancel and wait for this or would I be able to upgrade later on?

1st of all, the service would have to be offered in your area. If it was offered, and believe me there would be a big announcement in your area when it happens, then you could call in to see if you could be upgraded.

You have to wait, this is a new type of service that they're going to roll out market by market. It's not going to be a nationwide rollout all at one time.

You're just getting from both tarheels or myself some advance information is all.

I have no deployment information what so ever to your location or anywhere, so as a guess, and I repeat, as a guess with no deployment information you could be anywhere for 30, 60, 90 days or even 18months.

So sit back, feel smug you know more than your neighbor and somewhere in the future you'll see advertising in your area saying is coming. Until then you are allowed to drool for faster speeds

If your loop can be reassigned to a calix dslam, then your MEDR will be updated. Only time will tell how this works out.

Well.. thats the thing. I saw my MEDR jump to 32300 for about 2 weeks and all of a sudden go back to 10001

Im not sure what you will see - also with the conversion to Ensemble, I don't know how it will work.

They will need to do something with price/speeds.
I pay $54.95 for 10mb naked dsl . Charter is offering 20MB/2MB here for the same price.

My local Dslam has been labeled "socialist" and town hall meetings are being organized as we speak. School children cannot walk within 30ft. of it, and I fear there will soon be police tape around it as the posters stuck on it of late are quite nasty and full or anti-dsl commie rhetoric.
I think it's all because Jimmy what's his name and that habitat for humanity thing was planning on building affordable housing government-run gulags nearby

Doesn't look like my DSLAM is one your qualifying list, which doesn't surprise me--I can't seem to find any information on it--it's an AFC.

edit: I'm not even sure this is the DSLAM--I know though, for sure, this was the only new external equipment added to the RT when DSL was deployed here.

A committee was convened and the DSLAM has been censured and a somewhat partisan but non-binding resolution is in the works ...

I know I and others that have special Centurytel experience have mentioned on this Embarq Board... 15 Mbps and higher are FIBER OPTIC LINES ONLY. There is currently no exception. Centurytel has been trying some line bonding, but it has only been for the use of their IPTV products. No line bonding has been done by Centurytel for any residential accounts.

Yes, I'm curious about this as well as it's now mid-October-ish and there haven't been any updates to this thread. I just checked Embarq's website and it still appears that the 10 Meg is the top offering.

In the same boat- at least it's reliable though.

AFC's will not be capable of bonded DSL. The are usually deployed on a DS3 or OC3 far from the nearest CO. Also, the core of the AFC isn't capable of accepting bonded DSL.
Also know that AFC's are very rarely close to another DSLAM, so unless someone side-swipes the thing with a truck(which has happened more than you'd think(and Embarq doesn't really put in new AFC's anymore, instead replacing them with Calixes)), you're probably stuck with 10meg as your max.

the location of that DSLAM+other telephone equipment makes it almost impossible to hit...someone would have to be very drunk or someone would have to be incredibly unobservant and back into it (it's in a strange spot that you can pull into), so that's unlikely.

So it looks like unless they offer higher speeds on regular DSL, or CenturyLink gets ultra ambitious and deploys fiber in the boonies, I'm "stuck". Bummer. 10 meg is incredible now, and I'm more than satisfied and happy with it--I'm just looking at the future.

You could probably do higher speeds without the need for bonding with ADSL2, but the question is how stable will it be. As you look at that curve, you can see that there isn't much wiggle room to work with.

If my research is correct, it appears my line may be able to handle about 14-16 megabits per second down, but you bring up a very good point; if it goes out every few hours, is it worth it?

also at some point it's a bit more beneficial to have increased upload speed and not download, which, IIRC is just about tapped out at 896k (though I've heard ADSL2+ can go up to 1.4 megabits up and if Annex M is used, 3 megabits up).

You are correct about Annex M, and ADSL2+ has a theoretical speed limit of 32/3.5meg without annex M. however, that's in basis impossible to obtain.

If you're looking to the future, start dreaming about VDSL. It has a theoretical bandwidth of 250m bidirectional, although you would probably only really be able to pull 100meg both ways in reality. Of course, you can't really find a DSLAM that can actually support that kind of speed, especially out in the more rural areas, but hey, a man can dream
VDSL has been deployed in multiple European Countries already, maybe we will see it here some day
