For certain, I will get the advertised bandwidth when that happens.

DvlsADvc8 posted : Just in case it helps someone else:

I discovered that New Hope Telephone Coop requires subscription to phone service with every internet subscription not for any technical reason, but for a business reason.

They receive a subsidy from the federal government for each phone line. Without the phone subsidy, they claim they would not be able to remain open.

It's pretty obnoxious really. $49.95 for their internet service marketed as "DSLMax" (1.5M down, but real speeds of 3M+ down are common; the same speed comcast offers just up the road). Then, tack on another $25 for their cheapest phone service.

So basically, I'm paying $75 / month for ~ 3M down. Yes, my butt does feel sore.

DvlsADvc8 posted : Hey Big Al, I'm in north also in north alabama, but we have New Hope Telephone Coop - who is also rolling out Fiber to the home.

The various bandwidth meters I've tried online measure the connection at around 3M - 4M. Pretty disappointing if you ask me.

What really annoys me is that the coop still made us purchase phone service even though we don't have a land line - we only use cell phones.

I'd love for someone to be able to explain this necessity to me (obviously the customer service rep can't). I'm a software engineer, so I'm a technical guy, but this is just outside my experience. I would have though it would be something like Metro E. I have no idea why phone service would be necessary - it shouldn't be like DSL over phone lines, or so I thought; the coop sells it as "DSL", but there is no DSL modem.

Maybe someone can advise.

tschmidt posted : Welcome to BBR.

Once you get above a megabit or so speed has little effect on latency.

Need more specifics about how fiber will be used. Will they provide fiber directly to customers? If so then both speed and latency should improve (latency because there is no modem signal processing with fiber).

Are they deploying remote terminals and offering higher speed DSL due to shorter distance to customers? In that case may get higher speed but latency will not change significantly.

Are they installing fiber for backhaul. In that case there is no direct affect to customers but latency may be improved due to decreased congestion within their network.

There are several ISP specific forums here at BBR. May want to post in one of them. Try running line quality test from the tools page and/or traceroute (tracert in Windows) to stable sites like BBR. Latency should slowly increase with distance and hop count.

DSL lines are normally interleaved to improve noise immunity. If signal stats are good enough want want to try fast-path. This will reduce latency a little at the expense of more noise induced errors.

/tom

THE BIG AL posted : ive got DSL from my local telephone co op. in the next few months theyll be upgrading to fiber. i currently have 6mb down and 768 kb up. i usually do about 5.80 down and 0.83 up. im really not impressed with it though when it comes to my online gaming through my xbox and ps3. 2 of my friends have cable. one does 1.92 mb down and 0.24 up. the other guy does 0.70 down and about 0.19 up.our ping times are pretty much the same. on the games i play there is a 4 bar graph or whatever representing your connection just like on a cell phone. most of these games dont have dedicated servers so the host's bandwidth is the main factor on your connection. i usually have 3 bars and the occasional 4. the 2 guys with the really slow cable ALWAYS have 4. will i see an improvement in my gaming connection whenever i get fiber optic lines? why do you think they are able to connect P2P with the host better than i am? we all 3 have wired connections by the way
