strange cable and internet problem

this is an old problem that shaw has never really figured out but I did and I am not sure why this fix works but it does . Ever since I have had Shaw cable\ Internet service , the Internet would work great and cable tv would be clear for about one to four months and then the tv reception would get grainy and my Internet connection would start acting up. I called shaw on several occasions and had the tech come out and he would disconnect my Internet cable reset the modem and maybe change the ends on the wall outlet. this would fix the problem for about one month and up to four months, then it would start to happen again. I went through this for over three and a half years . About mid last year I decided to try this , when know one was home I would disconnect all the cable vision , Internet ,every cable that connected to the all the walls in this older condo ,and then reconnect after about one hour later, this seems to fix the problem.
Can anyone tell me why this works ? and how can this be fixed. to me it seems like there is some type of resistance building up to a point kind of like a clogged drain that you have to use the snake once in a while to clear.

Re-connecting cables often temporarily corrects a problem with a bad contact somewhere. After a while, the bad connection loses it's ability to transfer a strong enough signal and you start to get problems. This could last for a month, or an hour and is hard to find because everything seems fine when you test it. The only sure way is to replace everything; all lines and connections, filters and all, right up to the pole or mainline tap area in the building.

thats what I had thought and since this is an older townhouse well it most likely won't happen

also wouldn't be worth getting shaw digital since this is a 50+ building most people wouldn't want to pay for such a huge job

Shaw doesn't charge if they have to rewire, that's part of their support.

Are you sure

No I just pulled that out of my arse. Of course I'm sure. When we moved into our house they replaced every foot of cable, and even rerouted some of it, at no charge.

About mid last year I decided to try this , when know one was home I would disconnect all the cable vision , Internet ,every cable that connected to the all the walls in this older condo ,and then reconnect after about one hour later, this seems to fix the problem.

You have a connector somewhere in your suite where the connector-pads have lost their anti-corrosion plating. As a result, the connection gradually corrodes over time and eventually there is enough resistance in the connection to cause signal degradation.

Removing and replugging the connection breaks through the corrosion by the wiping action that occurs when the connector is removed and reinserted. And then the clock starts ticking for the next cycle.

Fix for the problem:

Once the problem recurs, disconnect and reconnect *one* fitting at a time - and check your picture quality between each remove/reinstall procedure. You should find there are one or more fittings which are causing the problem. Once you have identified the defective fitting(s), replace the defective fitting on each affected wall-jack.

Note: This fitting is the part that grips the centre-conductor on the cable - to carry the signal from the connector on the back of a wall-jack to the cable that runs from the wall-jack to the TV, cable-modem, etc. These connectors do go bad - in precisely the way described above - and produce the exact symptoms you describe.

You can buy replacement wall-jack-plates (or just the fittings themselves) at RP Electronics in Burnaby. (www.rpelectronics.com)

Another thing - check to ensure that any wire carrying through an outside wall - that runs from above down to that particular wall jack - has a "drip loop". What this means is that you go down *below* the hole on the outside wall and come back up again (about 5-8 cm will do) so that any water running down the wire from the rain drips off the bottom of the drip loop rather than running into the wall and into the back-connector on the wall jack.

Failing to install drip-loops is by far the most common cause of consistent and repeated failures in cable plant, since the water will follow the outside of the wire and corrode through the back of even a freshly-installed brand-new connector in about the time you've specified. And once the water is inside the connector, it will corrode the through-fitting as well - so that even if you replace the connector on the wire, the fitting is still bad and you'll eventually have a recurrence of the failure. You have to replace both the connector *and* the fitting to truly solve the problem.

The Shaw guys are supposed to look for and create drip-loops in places where they are needed. Sometimes you get people who don't bother - or they haven't been trained in how you have to install cable-plant in wet climates like we have here.

Hope this helps.

In regards to replacing anything, it's no difference at all. They aren't going to rewire an entire building if there's only 1 problem, but they will replace what needs to be replaced if you need parts/cable replaced. Just because you're in a townhouse/condo doesn't mean they have to troubleshoot and upgrade the entire complex.
