Researchers tell Senate cellphone cancer needs more study

»tech.yahoo.com/news/zd/20090914/tc_zd/244061
It is too soon to know if cell phone users are at risk of developing cancer, but research conducted in Scandinavia and Israel suggests that, at the very least, there is cause for concern and a need for further investigation, experts told a Senate panel Monday.

It is "premature" to say that mobile phones are safe, Dariusz Leszczynski, a research professor at the University of Finland, told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee.

"In my opinion, the current safety standards are not sufficiently supported by science because of very limited research on human volunteers," Leszczynski said.

Leszczynski urged the U.S. to commit more funding to research into cell phone safety.
Cell phone industry too big for pols to ever agree that cell phones may cause cancer. If, and that is a very big IF, cellphones can cause cancer, it will be decades before anything is done about it. Just look at tobacco industry.

Sen Harkin promises to examine the issue:

I suppose if you were an early adopter and used one of those huge brick phones for 20 years many hours day you MIGHT have an increase of cancer. Not with today's phones.

when looking at the characteristics of the waves emitted from a cell phone at the typical frequencies (850, 1700, 1800, 1900), one can see that these waves perform better at warming food than causing cancer. this is called "non-ionizing" waves, and when one looks at the physics behind these waves, they shouldnt be of any concern.
broadcast television has been using waves of a similar nature for decades. the biggest concern to a person with these waves is if you are near a high power transmitter; you are in for a wicked burn.

i am all for making sure that consumers are safe, but this is nothing more than a group of people preying on the uneducated public to pass their own agenda. i saw a similar story on nbc nightly news and let the people claiming to be "concerned" have it with their "contact us" page. we have been blasted with more harmful radiation for millenia (uv anyone?). fud. pure and simple.
