Telus doing upgrades in Kelowna....

On my way to work this morning I saw a Telus van parked on the side of the Hollywood Rd with the telco box hanging wide open....are upgrades happening?! I wished I had more time as I would have pulled over and asked the guy myself! I see these same type of box all over, but some have been changed and look like telco boxes on steroids! EDIT - getting excited as I want to get digital TV!

Yeah, some of the FTTN is getting turned on in Kelowna. But if they're only doing the physical skinning on your box, your provisioning is likely at least a few weeks away.

I know Abbotsford just got upgrades. They just sent me an email saying that Turbo was available in my area finally. Called in and got bumped from 1.5 to 6.0Mb profile taking effect Friday..... now that I think of it, I did see a couple of TELUS trucks by the FX box the other day..

well as of today, the box is still the same. I will try to include a chopped Google map of where the box is that I'm talking about. (closest to the top) Actually, come to think of it there is an identical box further down the street with the same style of yellow digits on it. I've marked it with a red 'X' as well.

Those are called SAC boxes (usually). TELUS vans are often at those boxes (they feed all the lines in the immediate surrounding area). If the vans are there for hours / days, they may be performing upgrades in the area. If not, it's likely it was just a regular repair / install / splice call.

(as a note, the contractors I've seen in the Lower Mainland that do the broadband build upgrades, usually don't have TELUS marking on them - just the logo / name of the contractor, or on rare occasions, both).

I live in the Glenmore area in Kelowna (near the golf course) and got an automated call from Telus last week informing me that they are doing equipment upgrades and that my DSL and phone line may be out of service for up to 5 minutes on Monday (yesterday). I'm out of town this week so I don't know if there actually was an outage, however I'm hopeful that I'll be able to sign up for the 15Mb service. I'm currently on the 6Mb service and in the past when I called to upgrade to 15Mb they told me it wasn't available yet for my house.

Fingers crossed!

Well, on my way home today I saw two big trucks with huge spools of some kind of cable hanging off the back and I think the name on the side was "global broadband" or something like that. My smile's getting bigger!

(edit) changed the name of the company on the side of the truck.

Just a quick update - now that I'm back home I called Telus and found out that, indeed, High Speed Turbo (15Mb) service is now available for my line. So I ordered it over the phone (requesting a Thompson modem) and it should be here on Friday. I'll be sure to post the before and after speeds!

In Abbotsford most of the SAC boxes are being replaced with Rdacs (Rapid Deployment Access Cabinet) . This will bring turbo and TTV to areas that couldn't have them before.

well, the box on the lower portion of the above picture is being dug up, and is suspended on a gantry frame looking thing. I've never noticed before but there's a third box on the road labeled "Hollywood" but is closer to the other arterial road called "Springfield" The third box is also being dug up and is suspended as well. I will be watching like a hawk for the new boxes now, hahaha!

FYI, I did go through with the upgrade and the speeds are much better than 6Gb! Here's hoping you can upgrade soon!

Does anyone have a picture of either the old or the new cabinet? Curious to know which one is in my neighbourhood. I saw a big wiring truck on Marshall (wasn't Telus though, looked to be a contractor) so I'm hopeful maybe soon there will be an upgrade...

I can definitely grab a picture of the new box for you later on today, and I'll try and hunt down a picture of the old style box.

is there some way for me to find out (or to be notified) when the lines around my area will be upgraded? I've been wanting to upgrade my piss poor 3mbps connection for years.

I have no idea where those telus "boxes" are around my neighborhood, how do I find out where there are? so I know my area is being upgraded when I see telus vans working on it

Soon. Surrey is starting to be turned up. You can PM me every few weeks. You'll probably be notified a month or two after with direct mail or a phone call trying to get you to order TTV.

okay, so I went and took a picture of the new boxes (easy to find) but the old ones man they are hard to find! I thought it would be easier in my area of the city but NOPE - there's Telus trucks EVERYWHERE! Almost all boxes I came across were brand new and a lot of them had big Telus trucks slinging heavy black cable (fiber?) It was pretty cool the other day my girls and I (one's 5 and the other's 2) were out for a walk and spotted one of the boxes open with a guy working in it. We went over to see what's inside and the guy was teasing the 5 year old saying 'yep, all these wires so you can get more cartoon channels!' Got a good laugh out of her. Anyway, I'm going to attach a picture of one that's closest to me, and another new one that looks like it has been doubled up. In my half hour of driving I found one that 'might' be a Telus box - sure looks like the old ones that were around here not long ago, but it may be something entirely different. It's going to be a crappy pic as it was almost in someone's yard, so I had to take it fast. I took these pictures with my phone which has no physical zoom so I cut the old box out. The red arrow points to one of the brand new boxes right beside it about 15 feet away. Oh, and the box that's doubled up has some fancy paint work (graffiti) that I edited out.
