Solely from personal experience the failure rate is way too high. I can't count the number of times that I or someone I know has had to have a box swapped out.

I know someone who recently bought a box and signed up. No monthly fee. -- Scott Henion

yabos join:2003-02-16 London, ON | The cable co.s are moving to OCAP based set top boxes within the next few years which means you will be able to buy an OCAP compliant set top and plug in your cable card(provided by the cable company) to receive service. There are already OCAP trials in Denver and other places with the Panasonic TV that has a built in set top box.

My parents bought all 3 of their Motorola boxes from Shaw, and knowing how stingy my father is they couldn't have been too expensive. Two have been replaced under warranty (one of them replaced twice and they got a free upgrade to a new model when the tech didn't have an old [refurbed] one in his truck).
