Keep in mind though that cable companies continuesly have to replace modems too. They break. Customers break them. They get obsolete. Etc.

In 7 years I am now on my 3d cablemodem. TWC doesn't "officially" charge me on the bill, but obviously they do count the modem price into your monthly bill.

They don't officially allow you to buy a modem either, but in former Adelphia areas it has been done.

What I am getting at is that TWC doesn't offer you a discount if you purchase your own modem, so it isn't always worth it, unless you REALLY want to have a specific model.
