|  Quite Socket 939 HSF?
My mom's HSF is starting to fail (very loud and lots of vibrating) I'm wondering what would be a good replacement? She is always complaining about her computer being too loud so I am trying to find something quite but no too expensive (no overclocking, cheap case, etc)

| Well the first question is, is it a single or a dual core, because dual core processors run a bit more hot.
I have a socket 939 Toledo 4800+ and I use a Thermalright XP-120 on it. There is the Arctic Cooling model, some Zalmans, Scythe, and some others.
You can go the hardocp and look at their lineup tests.
IMHO, the best choice for someone is the largest fan possible (120mm and up) because they won't be as loud and will be lower pitched, as well as moving more air.
I am partial to Thermalright because they have always been consitantly one of the very best available.
But since you won't be overclocking it, perhaps an Arctic Cooling Freezer (but make sure you get the hardware kit necessary for socket 939).
Don't run that system with a defective cooler, if you do, it could be bad.
Also, if the case is cheap, how good is its ventilation?

I have the OCZ Gladiator and it's pretty quiet with Q-fan enabled.
OCZ Gladiator Max would be even quieter, it's similar but with a 120mm fan instead of 92mm. |

I forgot to state that it's a old(er) single core. I think It's a 3400 Single Core. The system is several years old.
It's a standard mid-ATX case. It has 2 80mm fans in the rear to pull hot air out. |

How would this one do? It seems to have decent reviews, it's cheap, and supports socket 939.

That cooler seems decent. $40 on a fancy cooler would be a bit much for an old single core system like that.
2 80mm fans though, those are notorious for being noisy. |

| I've used a few of these in the past and was quite happy with them. Their dimensions are relatively close to a stock HSF, so they are easy to mount and don't get in the way of other components. Noise levels are pretty low and the cooling is quite good. I much prefer these to the Zalman 7700s. |
