Re: Massive Slowdowns? yes they do offer 3 meg because i can get it at my house, and for most customers in Montana they only offer the 1.5 and 3. I haven't seen anyone with 7, 12, or 20 in Montana since the 12 and 20 only comes with their new "fiber" lines which they have not brought to MT yet. |

I had Qwests' 7mbps service (by Pioneer Park) coupled with my Cisco 678 and the darn thing NEVER went down, except when a main transformer blew in Billings in 2005.
Now, I've got Bresnan's with a decent 12-15mbps download and always 1mbps upload. kckid join:2010-02-27 Buffalo, WY | reply to bigburd Well, the forum traffic is a bit slow so it looks like everyone on this forum has either started getting excellent service or have jumped ship---except me.
I wrote a letter to the editor in the Buffalo paper concerning Bresnan's service with a link to the DSLReports test page.
Several Buffalo customers did run speed tests. While I'm still stuck in the .835 mbps area (as I have been for several years), there were speeds recorded of: 2.7, 4.6, 4.7, 5.1 and 5.3. If this is the general experience of Bresnan internet customers in Buffalo, it's no wonder there (supposedly) haven't been many complaints. Of course, this performance is nowhere near the 8.0 mbps Bresnan advertises. Still, these other people are getting 3 to 6 times greater speeds than I'm getting. (BTW, my listed speeds on DSL's results page are from afternoon/evening tests. I have gotten speeds of 1.5 to 2.0 mbps in the mornings on occasion if I choose the right server. Most of my tests have been to Denver or L.A.)
So, the next question, after 40 to 50 calls to tech support in the past 4+ years and maybe 15-20 service calls to my house in the same period (where, on occasion, Bresnan techs have plugged their computers into my connection and observed the slow speeds), why am I getting such slow service and why don't they fix it? Why has no one from Bresnan ever followed up with me to see if my low speed problem has been solved? I guess I'll ask them. |

TychicusChildren are our most precious resourcePremium join:2002-01-18 Helena, MT | Kckid I had a very similar problem when they first took over from comcrap here in Helena.
The techs would come and hook up thier own laptops and could see the same results I did on my desktop.
They never did tell me what happened but finally did something to fix it at the head end as at the time I only shared my node with 4 other subscribers.
I think you should be able to get reimbursed or not have to pay for the time you have had this problem.

 | reply to bigburd Just want to let you guys know that I have been having this exact issue here in Bozeman for quite some time. I only recently decided to try to get it resolved, yet again. I have been working with Bresnan tech support and that has been uninspiring to say the least.
For me when my throughput speeds suffer it is typically during 5pm to Midnight and I have noticed that simultaneously my first hop in tracert (after my router) is experiencing very poor ping times. I use "ping -n 30 ip" on this first hop and when my throughput is bad I am typically getting an average ping to the first hop of 40ms to 190ms. The higher the ping the slower my throughput.
I have no idea what kind of equipment this first hop is (does anyone know?) but I think that this is where the problem is, at least for me. |

 | reply to bigburd everything has been awesome since november or so but just a few days ago when playing counter strike i couldn't help to notice the lag i was getting. So i did some traces and everything looks completely different, i now just go through bresnan in billings then just go straight from bresnan to level 3, i no longer have to go through the 66. ip after bresnan.
Now I thought that this switch would make things better since there is no backbone provider to deal with, that isn't the case right now but they may just be working out the kinks cause during the evenings starting @ around 6 or 7 my pings start to fluctuate between 60-200 depending on the server. | reply to bigburd I torrent just fine at 8mb/sec. Net congestion or lack of seeds with fast uploading is usually to blame when torrents are slow. The parts of the file you are downloading are coming from all over the world and not everyone has a a fast connection. I wouldn't blame this on Bresnan unless your local connection is congested. |
|
OmegaDisplaced OhioanPremium join:2002-07-30 Cheyenne, WY | I'm a member of a private torrent site where many of the members have 100mbit seed boxes.
I should always be maxing my connection, but I am not. And it isn't my upload either, I've been torrenting for about 6 years now, I know how to make a torrent download speed optimal. -- Whats smells like blue? |
|
 | Maybe Bresnan is starting to throttle connections despite their telling us they do not. If so I suspect it might be an attempt to keep congestion down in the areas that have had bandwidth issues. I did have issues in the past with torrents that rarely exceeded 1 megabits/sec, but I think the problem was with the torrent client and its' settings and not my net connection. |
|
 | I was told by a tier 2 tech that they have Sandvine throttling equipment "in place" in certain areas, but as far as he knew it wasn't enabled. This was some months ago when I used to have Bresnan. |

 | reply to bigburd About 2 weeks ago, my Bresnan here in Helena dipped dramatically. I always used speedtest.net Kalispell server as my measuring stick. I would consistently get 105 ping & 8 Mbps, which is the package I have. Now, I get 208 ping & am lucky to get 3 Mbps.
I have called Bresnan several times about this and I always get the "modem levels are fine, you ping great in network" bullsh*t they spew.
Traceroute was showing horrible MS to Level3, so I called Level3 and reported the problem to them yesterday. Low and behold the MS to those same Level3 servers is right around 100 now, instead of 400 last night. Pretty nice calling a company and having your issue resolved!
BUT my ping has not changed. My ping via speedtest to Kalispell is still 200+. So I decided to try Speed Plus for a month since it is free for a month. My Mbps is 4.63, on a 15 Mbps connection. I have tried connecting directly to the modem and speeds increase slightly, but ping does not.

Those pings aren't terrible, but I can't get better than 115 or so ping in MW2 on my PS3. A speedtest on the PS3 shows 15Mbps down 1Mbps up, but what good is it if I have a bad ping?
I had Qwest 3 Mbps at my previous place, and the pings were pretty much identical.
Any ideas? |

 | Hm...and just when I thought things were better in Bresnan land...Last night and the day before were perfect but now its back to the same old stuff. Might have to change my MAC address and see if that makes a difference. I did notice that when I tried rebooting my modem the US and DS locked onto a different frequency, but the problem was still there. It went from 21.2MHz US and 111MHz DS to 24.8MHz US and 117MHz DS.
