Kardinal posted : LA is up against the cap right now, and to take on $7M they'd have to give up something pretty big like Smyth ($6.2M) or Kopitar as their UFAs barely total $10M coming off the books even if you include the $1M buyout to Cloutier that ends this year. Their UFAs include Frolov, Modin (deadline acquisition), Halpern (deadline acquisition), Randy Jones (waiver recall acquisition) and O'Donnell.

That said, I don't put it past Burke trying for him but I think Calgary will want more than Kaberle since he'll only have one year left and I'm not sure what else they might be willing to part with that Calgary would want. Then again, they already took 4 players, have re-signed Stajan at $3.5M/4yrs, so who knows?
--
The thoughts expressed in the above post are those of the poster, and can only be attributed to his state of mind at the time of posting.
Join Team Helix

pnjunction posted : Well his return might not be 'optimal' as much as that it would exist. Beauchemin or Komi at this point have very little value on the market. Almost salary dumps at their pay levels, they'd probably just fetch a corresponding player dump rather than real assets like Kaberle would.

I actually saw Kaberle getting a bit physical while trying to get back on his game at the end of the season. He rubbed a few guys out behind the net instead of letting them dance around back there like he has before.

I think DJ might have summed it up when he said that Burke won't let him walk for nothing. Since waiting until the trade deadline would be risky (NTC back in play) and fetch much less trading him thus summer might be the only thing to do. The only other way to get value from him would be to keep him long term but that leaves us with a big D budget due to last summer's indiscretions.

Burke of course didn't ask him as per his own rules, but Kaberle knows he'll be traded.
