That said, I don't put it past Burke trying for him but I think Calgary will want more than Kaberle since he'll only have one year left and I'm not sure what else they might be willing to part with that Calgary would want. Then again, they already took 4 players, have re-signed Stajan at $3.5M/4yrs, so who knows?

Jonas Gustavsson has signed a 2 year deal with the Leafs, worth 1.35M per season. I think that's very reasonable, doesn't strain the team financially, and gives him two years to show what he's got and then we can sign him long term for more money if all goes well.

I actually saw Kaberle getting a bit physical while trying to get back on his game at the end of the season. He rubbed a few guys out behind the net instead of letting them dance around back there like he has before.

I think DJ might have summed it up when he said that Burke won't let him walk for nothing. Since waiting until the trade deadline would be risky (NTC back in play) and fetch much less trading him thus summer might be the only thing to do. If anything, if the team has a bad start in the first couple months, I'd expect Wilson to get the sack, but that might depend what quality coaches might be out there to replace him.

Wilson is an odd character, he's shown he can do pretty well with good teams, but a coach often shines best when he can turn around a slumping team or a team of newbies like the Leafs. Wilson hasn't displayed that in my opinion, nor the patience. His blunt, arrogant answers and explanations for things are annoying.

Look what Dave Tippet did with Phoenix this year. Or how Cory Clouston turned the Sens around. The Sens have been brutal since their stanley cup appearance, went thru coaches faster than anyone. Look at Bruce Boudreau a few years ago with Washington. Granted they had some good talent, but talent needs developing and I don't think Wilson is a good development coach...

the Leafs have acquired a decent amount of young players through FA college signings...as well, they didn't have much left in the cupboards when Burke came on board...if anyone is going to be critical about the barren cupboards, the Kessel deal is the only thing to be critical of, and many would still argue it was a decent trade...a player of Kessel's caliber isn't going to be cheap...you either pay up, or someone else will...Burke wanted him, so he paid...Kadri should play next season, and he is very good (current OHL Playoff points leader and was near the top during the regular season, despite being called up for a couple of games as well as playing in the World Juniors)...the Phaneuf trade brought in a quality defenseman, and the only decent player given away is probably White...rebuilding a team doesn't take a year, or two...in most cases, it is a 3-5 year process...give it time.

I think even Kaberle knows that his time has come to an end. Last year he was almost traded straight up for Kessel. The deal somehow fell thru, and I'm sure he's been tired of hearing the "waive your no trade clause cuz we want to trade you" over the past few years. Burke of course didn't ask him as per his own rules, but Kaberle knows he'll be traded. He kinda blew it IMO, by not going along with giving Burke more teams to work with rather than the 2-3 teams he apparently gave him hours before the deadline, and Burke couldn't swing anything.

There were reports that he does NOT want to play in the Western Conference. Whether Burke will be as acommodating in the off season, who knows, but if he gets a great deal from a west team, Tomas is going there and he may not like it, at least for 1 year until he's an UFA.
