 | Yeap Verizon is stuck in the early 2000's VOICE service Unsexy SmartPhone Selection and if you happen to even get a half decent smart phone they will lock the crap out of the phone with their nice secure Verizon blocks..."I am sorry sir but if you want to application then you will have to visit our AMAZING selection of outdated half broken apps on the verizon site".
I like the service but I utterly hate the phones. It's getting close to the point where I am thinking of giving ATT a try, because there at least people are more "free" to choose what to install.
I got Verizon BlackBerry and LG Touch and it's utterly useless. You can't browse the web since most of the web is broken. It's a test in frustration. Any apps you want to install on LG Touch must be from Verizon and locked down. It comes down to me using HI Tech Verizon phones just for Voice since any other function is Abysmal! |

 | Verizon hung its recent smartphone hopes on the Blackberry Storm & Tour. That isn't working out too well. The Tour has a 50% failure rate.
The BlackBerry Tour is suffering from a widespread defect that could seriously impact Research in Motion's bottom line, an analyst cautioned on Wednesday. The trackball on the smartphone is reported as clogging so quickly that it requires users to frequently clean it to keep it working; as most don't or aren't aware of it, a very high number of owners end up returning the Tour to the carrier. As many as 50 percent of all Sprint's Tours are being returned, while Verizon is "angry" enough that it's telling stores to expect a shift in support to Motorola's upcoming smartphone based on Android. RIM is turning out a lot of shoddy products lately and they are Verizon's main high end product offering. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

I will give Verizon credit though, they have always been fantastic about swapping a phone in a Verizon store, no questions asked. |

Can I help you with the settings so it works for you like it works for me? |

None of my BlackBerry users have trouble browsing the web either. The BlackBerry scored right behind the iPhone for web browsing in a comparison I read a year or so ago. |

 | reply to tempnexus The article is about smartphones... not your LG Touch, which is a dumphone. While Verizon did lock out there GPS, that stopped doing that in like November of last year! Also, a verizon Blackberry will function just like an ATT blackberry or a Sprint Blackberry. |

| reply to tempnexus I just got the Ozone and its not locked. I can use Google Maps with the built in unlocked GPS. I have the youtube, facebook app on it that I got for free. And it has wifi so that I can cruise the net and download apps pretty fast when at home. And the EVDO is pretty quick to when on the road. Yeah it might not be a touch screen but I prefer function over style. |

Sure I have BlackBerry 8830 (World Phone Edition) and most of the web is broken. Both when viewed via the BBrowser and I believe IE. The frames are all out of whack. The screen does not wrap the words correctly i.e. One line can be full then the word breaks into another line which only has 2 letters and then the rest is on the 3rd and 4th lines.
All "enchanced" web doesn't work. At most I might have java work once in a while, but forget about flash etc.
However it's good with Outlook, and Powerpoint (viewing). |

I will give Verizon credit though, they have always been fantastic about swapping a phone in a Verizon store, no questions asked. I got a Storm early this year (like January or February), solely because I was going overseas for a work project. Prior to that, I'd been avoiding the smart phones like the plague (I just don't need to be that reachable). It was an earlyish release, so it had a lot of software bugs. When I got back from my third trip to Europe, a firmware update was available. Verizon told me that loading it should solve a lot of the issues I was having with the device. Well, it sorta did: the firmware update bricked my phone. But, Verizon was very good about swapping it (and then swapping the replacement phone because the replacement's USB functions were broken). Since then, it's been fairly reliable.
While I like the interface of the iPhone better, I'd not trade my Storm for the AT&T network. Around here, Verizon's coverage is SOOOOO much better than AT&T's. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell |

Not anymore, I have a Verizon Touch Pro 2 and NOTHING on it is locked down, NOTHING. They no longer do it on phones, and have even released ROM's for phones like the original Touch Pro and Omnia that unlock GPS and other things, I would suggest you redo your Verizon review
As far as AT&T, Verizon has a much better network. Changing carriers just for phones is a mistake, what good is a phone if the network stinks? You should ALWAYS choose the network first, then the phones 2nd, if you do it the other way around you will be sorry. -- You've got to stand for something, or you'll fall for anything. |

 | I guess I have to go to Verizon and have them reflash it. Mine is locked down. And the network is the reason I am still with Verizon. However, I would love some better quality phones. For example many medical apps have been released for Iphone, not so for BB RIM. So now I have drag along with me my PDA, My BB and My Personal Phone....sigh. |

Get the latest version of Blackberry Desktop manager 5.0 from Verizon and you can update/flash the phone from the comfort of your living room..... lol
Then make sure in browser options you turn on java, kava, coffee and tea... Also, I downloaded Opera mini for Blackberry and it works very nicely to fill in where the Built-in browser leaves off and you can have both. |

| reply to Jovi The early production Tours do have trackball issues. The new ones have a green dot on the box, and I have not heard much about those failing. As with anything, the first production units can have issues.
Outside of that, it is a great phone. VZW has handled the failures very well from everything I've heard.
Also, keep in mind that the polls always lean negative for things like this since people who have bad experiences are very likely to complain, while those who have good experiences don't say much.
I even know Storm owners who are happy with their purchase. The problems that phone face include being RIM's first touch screen device, people thinking it is going to be exactly like an iPhone, and it is completely different from other BlackBerry devices that people may be used to. Software has improved, and should continue to improve. |

First, if you can make calls, it isn't useless. As far as a smartphone (especially BlackBerry) goes, email is second most important for business and most personal users. Both work great in most areas on Verizon. I'm not saying they are the best everywhere, but they are pretty good overall... better than anyone else around here, especially now that they acquired Alltel.
Web browsing actually works fine on the new BlackBerry devices. I haven't actually found a page that wouldn't load properly. That being said, I do usually opt for the mobile versions of the sites, since they are better formatted for a smartphone screen, even if it has a good full HTML browser.
The enhanced multimedia phones are not smartphones, and should not be expected to be on the same level. They cost less, and their plans cost less. They are optimized for voice first, and some basic video or music playback... not much else. |
