The best way to avoid paying for a service call is to have a spare modem on hand like I did. That way you can use the spare modem to prove that the broadband providers system is defective and not the modem that is defective.

When I lived in South Florida Adelphia provided terrible service, even before the bankruptcy. Anytime I had a problem accessing the internet, Adelphia Technical Support always claimed that it was my equipment that was defective in order to delay rolling a truck. The problem always turned out to be a low signal problem. If I did not have a spare modem I might been forced to pay for unnecessary service calls.
