said by scooby :I am sure that they can enable QOS to prioritize their VoIP service. Can we sign up for Clear yet here in Chicago? My sister just bought a place in Lake Zurich and despises Comcast who is her only choice for HSI. Clear would be a possible option if available. according to sprint, it is suppose to be active "this fall". take that for what it is worth. |

| reply to kapil Speedtest update from Aurora:
It seems that Clearwire has re-activated the Sprint/Nextel tower about .4 miles away from my office. Here is my speedtest:
It's my understanding that the upload speed will be increased to 1Mb/s eventually. Right now, my upload speed spikes up to around 1Mb/s only to get throttled back down to .50Mb/s.
It's starting to look good, they just need to get the rest of the area lit up and we'll be good to go |

| reply to bshelly said by bshelly :According to Xohm/Clear, I am about a mile outside of their coverage area from the nearest WiMAX tower. Call Clear. They have Chicago coverage maps in their system now. I called the other day and the rep emailed me screen shots...looks like they use the Google Maps API and overlay their tower information....shows tower location coverage in each direction etc. -- »www.VoIPTrunk.com |

| reply to scooby As an aside, I sure hope they bring back the ZyXel CPE that Xohm used. The clear Motorola devices are pretty basic...I rather enjoyed the ZyXel device that came with a built-in ATA and 2 FXS ports....one less device to use.
Clear, in areas where they offer VoIP, uses a stand-alone ATA like a PAP2. -- »www.VoIPTrunk.com |

 Clearwire Chicago Coverage |
I've been waiting to see this forever. While it's not quite as large as I had expected, it's not too bad either. I'm disappointed in the gap around the new I355 and not to mention Joliet, but I guess they're working on coverage every day. Hopefully we'll see that filled in soon. |

@sbcglobal.net | reply to LineNoise Its my understanding that Clearwire itself has less of a coverage area than Sprint 4G coverage... so will the 4G coverage be more widespread than this Clear map? |

join:2006-06-25 Bolingbrook, IL | False. Clearwire is the network "Owner / Operator" and Sprint is just a wholesale customer reselling Clearwire's WiMax service.
(If you want to get technical, Sprint owns 51% of Clearwire, but supposedly stays out of day-to-day operations) |

1 edit | reply to LineNoise Clear told me that their maps take at least a month to be updated with new coverage areas. This map may not be complete and I can't imagine them launching without covering Joliet and the far north burbs. That's crazy and not a way to launch a large metro area |

I sure hope you're right that it's old, it makes sense, but it's pretty sad if they can't even send it out with full coverage. |

| reply to kapil Clear is LIVE in Chicago!
I just received an email from Sprint about the 4G service and I just checked the Clear site and Chicago is now showing as LIVE!
The coverage area is much smaller than I was hoping for, but it covers my two most frequented areas (home and work).
Here is the email web page: »sprint.p.delivery.net/m/p/nxt/pr···53017615 |

| For what it's worth, the screen shots I was sent showed a much larger coverage area. I don't have the emails anymore or I would have posted here.
The coverage can't possibly be this bad...outside of the downtown area, for Chicago metro they would definitely want to cover Naperville, Oak Brook, O'Hare and Schaumburg areas....that's where the majority of big businesses users are. -- »www.VoIPTrunk.com |

Look at the coverage on Sprints site, it's actually significantly worse than the map I posted. The western suburbs is a giant hole. |

Sprint 4G coverage chicago | Clear Coverage Chicago |
Yeah, this is disappointing and pitiful. I can vouch that there WAS great coverage in Bolingbrook 1H '09, they did something and it disappeared and apparently never brought it back. yet. |
|
whymeintrouble Premium join:2001-06-20 Woodridge, IL | according to what I heard, the small part of Naperville that isn't covered (ME), is supposedly going to be ready "soon".... grrrrrr |

2 edits | trouble: There's a tower on Ridgeland Ave. (Naper Blvd & Ogden Ave area) I went by it a few weeks ago and the cabinet was installed, but the antennas were on the ground so they're working on that one.
In other news I spent 3 hours on the phone with Clear last night and until I got mad I was just transferred around. I was told that a new card was ordered and I will receive it in 24-48 hours. I have not received tracking numbers and I was charged a lease fee. They tried to get me to provide my SS# as well, I didn't give in on that one, but the "Market transfer" process is RIDICULOUS. I laughed every time they answered the phone "...We make it simple."
EDIT: Tracking number received, scheduled delivery is 11/4 by 3pm. It's been sitting in Indy for 11 hours... Plus they didn't include a Suite or company name on the package, I can't believe it, I'm never going to get the package now. |

| reply to kapil So I live in Park Ridge, right near uptown. If I type in my address on the Sprint website, it says I have 4G coverage at my house, no doubt about it, my entire town is blue (4G coverage). When I type in my address on Clear's website, it says there's no coverage at my house though. I also own a Xohm USB modem still from back in the day, is there any chance that this thing will work on the Clear network or sprints network or someones network... and if so, where do I get the drivers. Xohm's website no longer allows you to go to the support section to download them and Clear only links to drivers for the laptop card xohm modem. I guess my question is.. is it possible to have coverage from Sprint but not Clear? Even though I used to have coverage (barely) using my Xohm USB modem from Xohm? This has just been one big run around from clear/sprint support.. |

1 edit | I think the USB modems still work, if you had the express card like me then that won't work. I thought I received an email about a market transfer, but I can't find it. I don't know WTF I did with it. I spent hours on the phone fighting, but Kapil got it done in about 10 minutes. I don't know anyone else who tried to get the new equipment, so it's definately YMMV.
As for the coverage, you're right in the middle. Just give it a different address they don't verify or anything. I don't have coverage here in Bolingbrook yet so I gave it my office address.
EDIT: Got it! »www.clearwire.com/xohm/user
I couldn't figure out my customer ID. I need to look at the original paperwork to see if it's on there. |
