All,
I recently decided to give Frontier DSL max a whirl - i live within 1000 feet from the nearest CO.
I have a few questions -
1) Does anyone have any feedback in East Rochester, NY about this service?
2) Frontier said they give me a router with a wireless router in it - - - can I not use there wireless and use my own router (use theres essential as DSL modem)??? If I use theres can I change wifi name/password etc?
3). Reported speeds by my neighbor are 6.5 mbps. SHould this be fine for gaming online ps3? |

3 edits | 1: There are a few Rochester folks in this forum who will give you a review of the service. They should see this shortly.
2: The device you'll most likely get is a SpeedStream SE567. It's a Wireless Router and DSL modem combo. You can in fact use your own router. All you would need to do is bridge the SE567 so that the SE567 isn't managing the PPPoE connection nor acting as a router. From there, you can set up your own router and use your own router to manage the PPPoE connectivity. You're going to need to bridge the SpeedStream anyways unless you prefer running your PS3 with NAT 3 (unless new firmware is on those things that fixes the issue?). I have bridging instructions posted up throughout this site which I can post up in this thread for you as well.
But if you want to use their wireless router, you're free to log into the modem itself and change whatever you want. Can change anything from the Network Name to the security. The address to it will be »192.168.254.254 and the username and password will be admin/admin (which you can also change).
3: More than plenty, just make sure your line is not on Interleaved, or your latency will be double of what it should be. If you'd like, I know how to read the modem stats so once your line is online, post up the modem sync logs as well as your DSL stats and I can see if anything can be changed to improve the line. I myself am a pretty heavy Internet user, as well as a pretty heavy PC gamer (not a console person, sorry ) and I have two DSL lines. One DSL line from Verizon which runs at 1Mbps/384kbps, and one DSL line from Frontier at 3Mbps/384kbps (Frontier won't give me any more speed for now). Both lines are on Fast Packet and I pull the same latencies as a cable modem does with no lag spikes to and within the ISP network.
Any more questions, feel free to post them up -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

1 edit | Pretty much. Also, make sure your router is set to an MTU of 1492. That's what PPPoE DSL uses. If you don't it should be fine but you may see some PPPoE drops. Here are the instructions.
1. Attach your PC to a LAN port on the SE567 and log in as admin. 2. Go to 'ISP Connection' 3. Then 'Advanced Settings' and 'Configure the ATM Virtual Circuit' 4. Select 'Add a New VC' 5. Set the VPI to 0 and the VCI to 35. Click Next 6. Select 'RFC-2684 Bridged'. Click Next. 7. Enter some name for the connection. Click Next/Finish. 8. Click 'DISABLE' on the original PPPoE VC. 9. Then delete all of the VCs except the new one. 10. Click 'ENABLE' on the new connection. 11. REBOOT the SE567. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

The only thing Frontier requires once you switch the router into PPPoE or PPPoA mode (depending on whatever Frontier set you up with initially) is your Frontier username and password for the PPPoE/PPPoA. Keep in mind, use the Keep Alive option if you have it. Don't use Connect on Demand! -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

| reply to jsolari Hey jsolari, if you get tired of trying to configure the 567, I have a Speedstream 5200 here that I will sell you. Seriously. Then tell Frontier that you have aquired a modem, return theirs and get that ridiculous modem rental fee removed from your bill. Hi ho Smith6612 ! |

| reply to jsolari hey guys.
First of all - - love the DSL service it has been great.
Second - my only beef is frontier limited me to 6mbps (provisioning) - - - calling on this on Monday. With this being DSL max and with neighbors reporting speeds up to 8mb that is ludacris.
Third - - - how do I post the stats for you all to see? |

| Jsolari, Mazakman back when he did in fact get his DSL service hooked up for the 3rd(?) time, Frontier did set his modem to 6Mbps. He did talk to Frontier and they did push up his speed. Give them a call and ask them to turn up your speed a bit more. Otherwise, glad to hear the DSL is running good.
The stats can be found at »192.168.254.254/ . The username and password is admin/admin respectively. Once inside of the SpeedStream, go to Gateway Health, choose DSL stats, and you can either copy and paste the information here, or you can take a screenshot which will make it easier for us to read. For the modem logs (so we can see what line mode your line is set to ), just choose the System logs and copy/paste the whole thing. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |

@frontiernet.net
| reply to jsolari on the phone right now with frontier...one person says call tech support and the other said call customer service. Being bounced around.
Basically it seems the tested max in my area is 7 mbps. My question is - then why is my modem limited to 579800 bits or right around 5.7 mbps in the modem??
Ill keep everyone posted on the adventures this brings me to this morning. I will post logs later. |

@frontiernet.net | reply to jsolari I did get through to someone - - they had to open a ticket to have a CO tech look at it. They did say I should be getting better speeds and will fix it. |

| reply to JSolari Bear in mind that they can only increase it so much ... they were concerned about instability with my connection if they pushed it up too much. I cannot say that I will ever give Frontier another try again. Roadrunner remains the top value/service in town. After 11 plus years of having broadband service and trying Frontier several times, I shall stick with Time Warner now unless Frontier starts stringing fiber around the county and there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of them doing that. |
