To add onto Mazakman's post, when you do check out the statistics page for the DSL, it'll show things such as Margin, Attenuation, errors (if any), and your power levels. Frontier will use those stats as reported either by your modem or on their end at the DSLAM to see how high they can push your speed up to. Basically, a rule of thumb is, if your transmit power is low, attenuation is low and SNR is high, they can push more speed. But also keep in mind that Frontier (at least the techs in my area) tries to keep the SNR above 14dB on the downstream, and I think 10dB on the upstream. The lowest they will ever push that SNR down to, which I think they did do on Mazakman's line was 6dB, as below 6dB your modem will start to have problems syncing correctly or you'll see drop-outs or simply tons of line errors. Over at the Verizon forum, we always find that people tend to have problems with their DSL lines when their SNR for the upstream is lower than 10dB (usually when it's sitting at 6dB which is too low for upstream), and their downstream is lower than 9dB, or if they have a long line synced at a high speed with an SNR of 14dB.
This above was the reason why I'd like to see your modem stats, so that I can get an idea of how high Frontier might be willing to push your line before they start to run into problems. Now in Mazakman's case, when he first got DSL service with Frontier back when they began offering Free DSL/10Mbps service, I'm positive Mazakman was on an ADSL2/ADSL2+ capable line card, hence why his line was pushed to 10Mbps/1Mbps. When he got hooked up in the most recent attempt, Frontier did push him to 8Mbps but I believe they might have placed him on G.DMT mode (which is ADSL, an older revision of DSL) which meant that Frontier was capped at 9Mbps of possible sync for his line, which meant he would only pull ~8Mbps after overhead. I wouldn't know if this was the case though as I never found out that information, unless Mazakman you might remember what your modem logs stated. -- It's all fun and games in a Team Fortress 2 battle until your sentry gun is sapped by the Spycrab! |
