GPON is 32 customers per node, or less, in Verizon's implementation.

That said, running everything over IP all the way to regional data centers is MUCH flatter/easier than doing voice switching at the CO etc.

The land line will still be there but it will be Uverse or Fios and VOIP. The old switched office is on the way out but you still need a connect point even for ethernet based networks.

Many of the landlines are already on FTTN networks if you are more then a mile from the CO at least in the old Bell South region your POTs line travels over a digital connection part of the way.

Fair enough, though again the infrastructure is MUCH simpler with the newer technologies.
