The coolest, awesome, "sexiest" smart phone won't mean anything if it doesn't at all work like it's supposed to.
Paperweight mode anyone?
Precisely!

Without network reliability, a wireless phone (regardless of HOW many features it claims) is a paperweight.

I remember the bad old days of Bell Atlantic Mobile (the grandfather of what is current VZW) when network reliability was a joke (disconnects in the middle of calls, even while still within distance of the same tower, etc.).

I prefer (and recommend) VZW for three reasons:

1. Network reliability. I don't have dropped-call issues, and call-quality is as clear as that of any landline (including VZ fiberlines).

2. Coverage (without roaming). Mom's been a VZW customer FAR longer than me, and she takes her VZW Samsung phone everywhere. The only time she's ever been whacked with roaming charges was calling from a cruise ship or one of the islands. Atlantic City? Dallas? Las Vegas? California? No roaming charges. Combined with free calls to other VZW phones, then Friends and Family (for ALL customers, not just former AllTel customers), I have practically flat-rate voice. (F&F is used strictly for landline and non-VZW wireless numbers; as it's unnecessary for VZW wireless numbers, which are free.)

3. Feature-itis vs. network reliability (common handsets). Let's look at the Blackberry Tour (it's a non-exclusive BB handset; currently offered by Sprint and AT&T Mobility in addition to VZW). The extra features that Sprint and AT&T Mobility add are largely reminders of how UNreliable the back-end of their network is (being able to make calls from hotspots tells ME that they don't have enough towers). Also, I actually prefer the Storm over the Tour (and my preference has nothing to do with price; the Tour has a traditional B keyboard, which is Rather Bulging; the Storm has SureTouch, which makes the Storm far more portable/concealable than the Tour or other traditional-keyboard BBs). Throw in bargain Storm pricing, and....cha-CHING!

I agree! I don't need a paperweight, I need a phone. For a while there (while with ATT) I actually had to use pay phones occasionally to make calls, it was so bad.
I switched to a prepaid phone as soon as my contract expired and now use Straight Talk unlimited, which runs off the Verizon network. VZ's network is FAR superior in my home area. To hell with the latest gadgets, it's just another way to trap customers anyway.
