Re: EU Funding 'Orwellian' Artificial Intelligence Plan (INDECT) Glad a few others remember we live in a republic.
Remember when we were free in the 50s? Those were great times.
Remember when we were free in the 60s? Yay, drafts!
Remember when we were free in the 1860s? Yay, civil war!
Remember when we had slaves? Yay, good times! Free Labor!
Anyway, yeah, it all sucks, and then we die. And somewhere, some bored civil servant will close our files when we do. Life goes on.

said by JohnInSJ:Glad a few others remember we live in a republic. Did you think that only you and a favored few others possess this esteemed knowledge?
The United States is, indeed, a republic, not a democracy. Accurately defined, a democracy is a form of government in which the people decide policy matters directly--through town hall meetings or by voting on ballot initiatives and referendums. A republic, on the other hand, is a system in which the people choose representatives who, in turn, make policy decisions on their behalf. The Framers of the Constitution were altogether fearful of pure democracy. Everything they read and studied taught them that pure democracies "have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths" (Federalist No. 10).

1 edit | Well, I'm glad the only differences expressed with my post was whether the U.S. is a democracy or fits some other category.
I'll stand corrected - the US History Encyclopedia: Republic article in the link below does a nice job of discussing the type of government the U.S. has been;
Unfortunately, the balance of power between branches seems to have tilted in favor of the executive branch in the past several years. The power grabs of the old bosses are now in the hands of new bosses. A fourth "branch" - private sector lobbyists - seem to have acquired more functional power, reach and surveillance capabilities than the three official branches.
edit - SUMware , I'm also particular about who I have a beer with. They have to buy - and no fizzy yellow water, either. -- The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding. -- Justice Louis D. Brandeis |

Yes, there seems to be considerable debate about that! Of many of the sites that I've read, having direct public elections seems to be critical element in conformance to a 'democratic' notion. The election of the US President is technically indirect - the voters elect the electoral college, who then elects the President. It seems that the founders of the US intended to establish a republic, but were fearful of a democracy.
»www.thisnation.com/library/books···/10.html Federalist No. 10 November 23, 1787 Author: James Madison
From this view of the subject it may be concluded that a pure democracy, by which I mean a society consisting of a small number of citizens, who assemble and administer the government in person, can admit of no cure for the mischiefs of faction. A common passion or interest will, in almost every case, be felt by a majority of the whole; a communication and concert result from the form of government itself; and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party or an obnoxious individual. Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths. Theoretic politicians, who have patronized this species of government, have erroneously supposed that by reducing mankind to a perfect equality in their political rights, they would, at the same time, be perfectly equalized and assimilated in their possessions, their opinions, and their passions.
A republic, by which I mean a government in which the scheme of representation takes place, opens a different prospect, and promises the cure for which we are seeking. said by EGeezer:I'm also particular about who I have a beer with. I also recommend Bell's Two Hearted Ale, which I had recently at a local eatery. It's not a Belgian, but is a pleasantly citrus-y ale with the pale ale hoppiness and malt. -- The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding. -- Justice Louis D. Blue2Premium join:2004-04-14 France kudos:1 | reply to SUMware How ironic. They are going to watch what we do, where we go, what we read? i thought Google/Amazon et al already did that.
So if we didn't see you kicking and screaming about google maps invading privacy, google maintaining databases of search results, Amazon deleting content on your Kindle, Amazon keeping tabs on your Kindle (but not disabling it from adding new purchased content if stolen) etc., what's a little government use of these technologies between friends?
It's a package deal. If you didn't scream before, it's probably a little too late to start now... |

Hope to find them around here and will try them. There's a decent imported beer facility about 5 minutes from me.
And if you haven't already, may I suggest Chimay (Blue Label), Duvel, Trappistes Rochefort 10, Westvleteren 12, Celebrator (German), Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale (UK). |

| I'll submit this list for a Christmas present. I've had Duvel and Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale, both tasty. I'll have to mortgage the house for the Westvleteren 12. My taste buds are probably too plebian for a $35 1/3l beer.
Is that Ayinger's Celebrator Doppelbock you're listing?
I've also had Goose Island Nut Brown.
