[ARIZONA] 300+ days of sunshine is *not* weather...

getting a little frustrated with the monsoon season this year. i usually look forward to the storms with the heavy rain and winds with the thunder and lightning. nothing better than watching a storm roll in as i drive home for the night.
hasn't been much this year in terms of storms - maybe two decent ones for me in chandler. i look at the weather map and see other places that get rain and clouds and varying temperatures. apparently we only get hot, or damn hot.

looks like more of the same for the coming week

Synopsis...
high pressure will build the next few days to the northwest of
Arizona...while low pressure dives down into the central Great
Plains. This will leave the Desert Southwest in a very dry northerly flow between the two systems for much of this week. Temperatures will go from well above normal today to near or slightly below normal by midweek. Breezy conditions are also likely Tuesday and Wednesday...mainly during the morning hours. There will be a gradual warm up by the end of the week as high pressure aloft strengthens.

&&

Discussion...
as of early Monday morning...skies were clear across the County Warning Area under the influence of a dry northwesterly flow aloft. Surface dewpoints were mostly in the 40s over the lower deserts. Infrared/vapor imagery showed a large upper ridge developing along the West Coast...while an upper
low took shape across the northcentral states. Forecast looks to be on the dry side for our area over the next 7 days...with the main weather challenges to affect the aviation/fire weather programs.

Over the next 2-3 days...forecasts forecast the upper ridge to become SW-NE oriented...while the upper low over the northcentral states retrogrades under the upper high center. As the low approaches from the East...Heights fall and surface/low level gradients increase quite a bit. Low/middle level northerly/northeasterly flow between the high and low will usher in very dry airmass to the County Warning Area...with 850mb dewpoints lowering to below minus 12c over most of the County Warning Area by Tuesday afternoon.
Surface dewpoints are forecast to drop into the teens and 20s over the lower deserts as well. Of course...with the increase in low level gradients...breezy to windy conditions will set up mainly over the eastern County Warning Area Tuesday into Wednesday. Strong low level winds may set up some low level wind shear issues over the central deserts Tuesday...and the very dry air combined with the increased wind will increase fire danger. Under generally sunny skies...and as heights fall aloft...cooler air will advect into the County Warning Area leading to a marked cooling trend Tuesday into Wednesday. Today will see maximum temperatures well above seasonal normals...with a high of 105 forecast for Phoenix as compared to a normal of just 98. By Wednesday highs over the lower deserts will be mostly in the 90s...with the high at Phoenix to fall to 96.

Thursday into Friday the upper low starts to shift back towards the east...as high pressure again develops aloft near the Pacific northwest coast. As this occurs...heights rebound...and a gradual warming trend begins which will continue into the weekend. Airmass will stay dry through the 7 day period...with mostly clear skies on tap each day.
ick.

But It's A Dry Heat (as if that helps!)
Tucson's been the same way. Hardly any rain this summer.

Hopefully "winter" will bring some rain.

love the picture.
anyone that says "its a dry heat" has never been to phoenix. i've worked in texas and oklahoma before. sure, its hot and miserable, but at least it gets cool at night. once the sun goes down, all the moisture in the air makes it pretty pleasant.
when its 115 outside, you have to factor in the heat from the pavement/blacktop/concrete that you are walking on (what is grass, anyway?) so it really feels like 140+, and at night, it doesn't cool off. once night the *low* temperature was 95. thats it. the low temperature was higher than the high for 7/8s of the country. in-freaking-sane.

i'm praying for rain this winter too. would love some totally overcast days to cheer me up. i am depressed when i wake up and see the sun.

I know the feeling; I tend to hibernate in the summer because of the heat/sun. Too much sunshine is like too much ice cream. And the heat gets to be a drag; this summer was one of the worst on record. I don't care for Phoenix Metro because it never cools down at nite. Tucson is a little better but it's going the way of Phoenix and has become a heat island.

I live for the cloudy days!

Which is precisely why I no longer live in Chandler, AZ. Two years was enough for me.

Sure it's a dry heat, but so is my oven, and you don't see me voluntarily sticking my head in there...

the winters are nice though.
wouldn't have a complaint on them except for getting cut off nearly every day by a canadian. if it weren't for the accents and the "sorry, buddy" afterwards, i might be upset

Not to mention the glare of the sun off that pasty, white skin can blind a person.

sunglasses, my friend. they aren't just for the pool or the beach anymore
though i do think that it would be a clever way for canada to take over the southwest part of the us and annex it.

very true - though usually i only need chapstick if i've had a hard day at work. i lick my lips a lot when i get nervous or stressed (or so i've noticed) and that will dry out my lips a lot.
of course, in the abq, you guys have a lot more wind than we do in phx. that plays a big role in lip dryness.

Its downhill from here. Grab your laptop, go out side and surf DSLR. Revel in the fact that most everyone else is an ice cube, or will be shortly.

We love it here. Been here since '70 and haven't found any place we like better. Living here is simply a mindset.

and i don't doubt that fact. i'm just not a huge fan of the heat - especially because i sweat profusely and its hard to hide that in the summer.
i don't think i would be this bitter about living here, but this summer was a drag - i love the monsoon storms!

I've been kicking around AZ since the late 70's and I still curse the summer heat. I'm not particularly in love with the winds/thunder bumpers/lightning of the monsoon season, but I like the rains it brings.

Used to be AZ got half it's rain in the summer, and the other half in winter, but that's not happening much any more. Looks like the climate changing, or we are in a cycle.

But I sure do enjoy the winters here in AZ!
