Anyways I cannot see why ATT would want to GPS lock this device. If you can take it anywhere it only hurts their competitors while helping ATT. To not be able to use this internationally makes it worthless. It would be cheaper just to buy a cell signal booster than use this. A quick search on google shows that Tmobile does not restrict their internet @home cell service and it can be used internationally. Well GPS Jammers are around $50 so as soon as someone makes a cheap GPS Spoofer that will just loop a phoney gps single then this will be able to be used anywhere. I found one spoofer but it is like $8,000. This operates on licenses frequencies, the same as att's towers. It uses gps to make sure it only runs where it has a license to said frequencies, and outside of the usa it won't have any license to run, interfering with another carrier's network, so the gps prevents it.

Since its using AT&T licensed spectrum, it has to determine by GPS if you're in an licensed area. I prefer T-Mobiles UMA solution that makes use of WiFi handle voice/data, and it can be used out of country, as there's no way to determine if you're on local or remote WiFi (outside of DNS/IP GPS). -- Canada = Hollywood North

If people start fooling these things into working in ways other than intended, they will not work, and will cause interference with other carrier networks or services in the area. This could ruin the experience for everyone.
They are not using GPS to force you into paying for roaming. It is a technical requirement of everything about these devices. They must know what frequency to transmit on, and they must be able to integrate with the rest of the wireless network to support things like call handoffs. They have to know where they are.

No it will not work with fake GPS coordinates. It does more than a GPS position check before it turns on the 3G signal. What do you mean??? All this device needs to activate is an internet connection and its GPS location. There is nothing more it can do beyond those two checks. I guess it can talk to a local ATT tower, but many people who might use this may not even get an ATT tower reception thus the reason why they us it. Also if you fed it false GPS and used it internationally then it will not talk to an ATT tower, so yes all you will need to fool this to use internationally is feed it fake GPS data and provide an internet connection (possibly with a US vpn if it verifies that the IP is a us IP).
All I would want this for is to use internationally to use my US cell anywhere I have an internet connection. -- Democrats are not Socialists any more than Republicans are.

| | | | | | | | Re: International Travel??? The device also does a 2G/3G network listen while acquiring the GPS signal. It listens to see if it can find any other AT&T 2G or 3G neighbors, even if they're weak. The GPS also is compared against the registered address, so you better be real close with your spoofing. | |
