1 edit | Heads up Upgraders win7upgrd NOT BOOTABLE
Just found out myself from an actual VLK DVD from work. You cannot use the old vista trick (install twice) with win7 pro upgrade. I REPEAT, the WIN 7 PRO UPGRADE DVD from microsoft IS NOT BOOTABLE and will not install on clean drive.
I have canceled my $99.00 upgrade purchase accordingly. |

The key determines whether it is a full or upgrade version, the DVD is the same. This is how Vista worked as well. |

3 edits | NOT THIS TIME. THE DVD IS NOT THE SAME. I HAVE THE OFFICIAL "GENUINE" MS VLK Win7 pro Upgrade DVD AT WORK, from my vendor....
With all due respect, what you are saying makes no since with this issue. With the Vista upgrade disc, you could install on a CLEAN Bare Drive. You CANNOT do that with The Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE disk. IT IS NOT BOOTABLE PERIOD. You have to actually do an upgrade or new install form WITHIN an existing legitimate qualifying version of windows. You CANNOT BOOT TO THE Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE DVD and install CLEAN like you could with VISTA UPGRADE DISC PERIOD. It CANNOT BE DONE
The VISTA LOOPHOLE HAS BEEN CLOSED, PERIOD....
The REAL problem will begin when you need to fix your bootloader or something of that sort. You CANT boot from the Win 7 UPGRADE disc, so if you dont have a vista disc you're screwed (unless you get the vista boot disc torrent download). Also, if your upgraded WIN7 install takes a dump, you will always have to reinstall vista (or whatever verson you had before) FIRST before reinstalling Win7 upgrade. Hopefully you will have a good "backup image", but god help you if you change hardware.... I think this is going to be ugly, but I hope I'm WRONG..... Anyway, I cancelled my personal upgrade order. Just spreading the word. |

You can create a recovery disc via the Backup and Restore app.
(EDIT)
You are correct that the Upgrade disc MUST be started via an existing OS. You cannot boot and install fresh, but you can do a fresh install once you start the installation from within a valid upgradeable product. |

| reply to osxtasy I did see someone quote a MS document stating that a version "upgrade" from the RC to either Premium or Professional would be possible by running the upgrade disk from within the Win7 RC... -- Read your contract and TOS before signing anything. |

| Which is great.....UNTIL you need to reinstall for some odd reason AFTER WIN7 RC activation is no longer possible..
Now if you have a good IMAGE, great, unless you changed hardware(or something of that sort), which MIGHT cause a headache....
Just sayin, not trying to start an argument...... |

| reply to osxtasy Wasn't it like that with the XP upgrade? So if you install a new drive and figure to just start over with a new install, you'd have to install Win98 or ME or whatever, THEN install XP over it.
I agree that it shouldn't be this way. Good reason to not upgrade at all. -- Some people are like slinkies - not really good for much. But they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs. |

So now I'll have to reinstall Vista prior to Win7 upgrade if I do? Really blows is that I lost the media to Vista for my computer. |

| reply to osxtasy I do wish they'd go the route of one bootable disk containing all versions including OEM licenses. Let the key decide the final version!
It is a step back from what was done in Vista.
However, it's within their right to release as such. I'm sure they have their reasons but the restrictions/limitations make for a real PITA. |

| reply to osxtasy How exactly are you getting an "upgrade" disk with a VLK? The only windows 7 edition that really has anything like a VLK is Enterprise Edition. I also wonder where this "official upgrade" disc really came from. Nothing is labeled as an "upgrade" disc on Technet or MSDN right now, and if there is a difference in the upgrade disc compared to the full version disc, we wont likely see that until the official release of the retail discs next month.
It's possible, but I find it very unlikely that any 7 discs won't boot, as you need to be able to boot them for recovery options and such. Nowhere on the link does it say the disc won't boot, it just says that a previous OS needs to be installed first. I guess we'll find out for sure next month. -- - cmcasey79, BrightHouse Business Class (10000/1500), Farmington Hills, MI |

That is a good point, I don't remember there ever being a version of Windows released with a VLK that was an upgrade version. There is always a first time for everything, but I'd also like more info. |

But I never had to install an earlier version. I tried to install Windows XP Home Edition (upgrade) on a clean disk. At some point I was asked to insert the CD for the qualifying OS, so I inserted the HP Pavilion Windows Me recovery CD. Nothing happened, except the installer insisting that I must insert a qualifying system CD. In the end, I broke down and reinstalled Windows Me from the OEM recovery disks. Booted into Windows Me, and then started the Windows XP upgrade installer. This time it found the qualifying, installed OS, and happily allowed me to proceed. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| reply to osxtasy I'm nearly positive you are entirely wrong. Even if you were correct (and I'd bet a lot of money that you aren't) you could always get a copy of the full disk and use your upgrade key. -- If anyone would like an invite to »www.lockerz.com, pm me. |
