| reply to NormanS Re: Heads up Upgraders win7upgrd NOT BOOTABLE
I tried to install Windows XP Home Edition (upgrade) on a clean disk. At some point I was asked to insert the CD for the qualifying OS, so I inserted the HP Pavilion Windows Me recovery CD. Nothing happened, except the installer insisting that I must insert a qualifying system CD. Some of those recovery CDs are not ordinary install CDs. Instead, they have a compressed disk image which is writted to the disk on recovery. The install check won't find what it is looking for.
In my case, I was installing XP pro upgrade, and inserted a retail NT workstation CD to prove that I qualified. -- AT&T dsl; Speedstream 5100b modem; Zyxel NBG334W router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.14 |

| reply to Winerin said by Winerin :I think this kind of sucks. I actually preferred to format my drive prior to doing a reinstall of Windows. So now I'll have to reinstall Vista prior to Win7 upgrade if I do? Really blows is that I lost the media to Vista for my computer. Just going on the assumption that you have a computer with a blank slate. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. Reinstall vista, activate and then upgrade to win7 by going thru the re installation process all over again. I also liked the old way of popping in your current OS disk and letting the validation process go thru without having to reinstall the older OS.
I think that you'll be able to format if you have a windows 7 pro upgrade disk. You'll just have to have your current OS running and then pop in the upgrade disk, where it will check to see if your current OS key is valid with the MS servers and then ask you if you wish to reboot and go thru the f-disk and or format process from there. Some people WILL have to format, esp if going from a 32bit to 64 bit OS upgrade. |

| reply to osxtasy I know next to nothing about Win7 and all my VLK disks seem to be full version, not requiring any previous installations (IIRC).
However, if all that's needed is to trigger the install from an existing OS, wouldn't BartPE fit the bill? This would be convenient as this is already my portable method of installing XP to a bare drive via USB. -- My Site |

Yes been saying that, read it on a tech blog somewhere. It needs to be run from within an activated OS, however you can still get a clean install... Once you get a clean install use the built in imaging software within windows or software of your choice so that you can quickly revert back to a fresh install. Kind of sucks, but as long as I can do a clean one I am happy. |

but, if you're feeling too lazy: While you can purchase an upgrade version of Win7 to use on a current XP system, you will be required to perform a clean install. XP will not upgrade to Win7. |

Never seen a VLK "upgrade" disc before ... That's very interesting. Not to mention cancelling your $99 Win 7 when what you're saying may or may not be true ... you could have just resold your "upgrade" for a profit to help pay for your "full" version. -- "Not many people know this, but I happen to be quite famous." |

Probably not, because a WGA check is performed to make sure you're not upgrading from a pirated OS. |

| reply to XBL2009 said by XBL2009 :I doubt the upgrade key will work on a full install either for those of you contemplating it. It won't work for a full install, but for Vista, you could enter an upgrade key and the full DVD would revert to upgrade mode. In other words, you could take a bootable full-version DVD and install your upgrade with it, just not cleanly without the "Vista Hole" the OP is referring to.
If you have to start the upgrade from within an existing OS, that seems like a completely moot point however. |

IT IS NOT BOOTABLE, and CANNOT BE INSTALLED WITHOUT A PREVIOUS OS INSTALL ALREADY ON THE HARD DRIVE.

Running Windows Vista? If you have Windows Vista, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in -place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista). Running Earlier Versions? If you have Windows XP, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. But you must back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications. If you’re running Windows 2000, you’ll need to purchase the full product and do a clean install.
Thats from the MS website. Now, I am not saying that something didn't change, but I think it more likely that your disc is abnormal from the OEM discs that will be going out.
Here's hoping...I'll be pissed off if I can't clean install...I DO NOT want to literally upgrade from OS to OS. -- Let us so live that when we come to die, even the undertaker will be sorry. -Mark Twain
