said by Surfinusa :Does anyone know if you can upgrade Win XP PRO to Win7 Home Premium ?? Or would this be a conflict?? No you can't upgrade. It will reformat your drive and do a clean install. My version of 7Pro saved all my old XP Pro programs, documents, etc. in a folder on the C drive labeled "windows.old" I don't know if the Home Premium version will do the same.
Hope this helps you. -- If you can read this thank a teacher. If you can read this in English thank a vet.

I'm just going to wait and see. Shown above is an excerpt from "What You Need to Know Before Installing Windows" on the Vista SP2 install DVD. It says you cannot boot the upgrade DVD, when just the opposite is true. |

| It says you cannot boot the upgrade DVD, when just the opposite is true. I think that might mean something different from what you took it to mean.
In one sense of the term, I cannot boot my computer with the XP install disk. Sure, I can insert the disk and boot. But I get into the XP install program, not "into my computer". By contrast, I can boot from my linux install disk, go into rescue mode, and actually do lots of stuff other than install. -- AT&T dsl; Speedstream 5100b modem; Zyxel NBG334W router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.14 |

| reply to osxtasy So now comes the question about if this is true how can we install fresh and trick windows into thinking we upgraded?Theres gotta be a way to trick it into thinking that. Maybe replacing a config file with one from an upgraded copy. and before you guys go calling me a pirate i own a legal copy of XP. I just dont want to pay $200 for windows but i also dont want to install xp then install 7 everytime i reinstall windows. |

| If you have an OEM install of Windows XP, and don't have a proper install disk (as opposed to recovery disks), you don't have a choice. Either pay for a retail box of Windows XP, or start with the OEM factory state of Windows XP on the HDD. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

1 edit | reply to osxtasy Upgrade from WIN 7 to Win 7?
I have a copy of the final WIN 7 version (no not beta, not RS, and not RTM). I am using it under Microsoft's try and buy program. I do not have a key.
I had previously took advantage of the Upgrade pricing and I have an order pending for a Win 7 Home Premium and a legit key.
I installed WIN 7 Home Premium final and put Vista on he shelf. I did this because I thought it would be easier to upgrade and before all these upgrade scenarios surfaced.
Now in all the scenarios that have been discussed the crowd is silent on a Update from WIN 7 To WIN 7. How do I use the Upgrade package to get a legal install with the Update Key without a Vista reinstall? -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

Just an FYI:
I got the ISO of Win7 Ultimate build 7600.16385 which is an RTM build, from my school's network. It was verified as a legit Win7 image.
Burned the iso, the DVD is completely bootable. I haven't tried it in a VM yet, but this version booted right up when I rebooted my machine with it, it was a bootable DVD.
Also, when I put in the 64bit version, I got an error message saying this version was not upgradable, and to insert the DVD and boot from the DVD
I followed bradenmcg's link, and was able to create an install DVD like he said, that has both x86 and x64 versions of starter to ultimate, and it's completely bootable.
Now the question is will it accept a purchased upgrade key, when it was a full install from scratch, not started from within Windows. |

I believe that is the version I have. I tried to install it on a hard drive that had a corrupted version of XP on it. It booted on the DVD, but all I got was the win7 splash screen. I never got an option to install. I ended up installing XP and then running win 7 from within XP. -- RIP my babys Buttons 1/15/94-2/9/07 & Beamer 7/24/08, Buttons, Buttons video, Beamer

| reply to osxtasy I also put a fresh copy of WinXP on a VM, and inserted the DVD and "upgraded", even though it needs a clean install since it is not Vista.
Absolutely no check to see if your WinXP copy is legit. No WGA check at all.
So I wouldn't worry about upgrading from XP, seems like Win 7 does not care at all.
I also checked in the ei.cfg file from the original ISO, and it says this: [EditionID] Ultimate [Channel] Retail [VL] 0
So it looks like this is NOT a VLK version, but a retail image. And it's 100% bootable.
Bottom line, retail version IS bootable, the OP is talking about a different VLK version. |

join:2005-08-20 Bensalem, PA | I guess it had to have been a full version. Regardless, I'm all set... guess i shouldn't use or buy an upgrade disc.
If my purchased upgrade key won't work after a full install then I guess i'll have to do the double install trick. |

| reply to Koil Koil, your link to the microsoft store says: If youre running Windows 2000, youll need to purchase the full product and do a clean install.
This same store said upgrading from win2k was fine just 5 weeks ago. Now I wish I had copied the url in my screenshot. -- The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth |

N/M, I see what I was missing. |

| Yeah, all the places selling it used to say that. Some bonehead at microsoft must have decided to change the policy, so they quietly removed that text from the retailer's sites. I had planned to use my win2k license to validate the upgrade so I could still install my copy of xp if I chose to. Now I will have to burn my xp license for this upgrade. Although I'm still going to accept my pre-order...I'm angry about this! -- The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth |

| I have a copy of the final release of Win7 that I have been using for about 2 months (no real key; just Microsoft's try and buy).
On OS went south; could boot to "C". I use that disk to do a fresh install of Win7. Got the box all setup again.
Today I just took my valid key and entered it, activate in about 30 seconds. Nothing to install or download.
So, I was able to do a clean install with the Win7 disk.

| Yes. No problem at all. It formatted and wiped out all traces of Vista64 Ultimate. Had to go into the bios and set the dvd drive to first boot device. That's all. Nice fresh clean install of "7" -- "It's a nice day if you wake up in Disneyland" |
