Re: U-verse Opinions? I was just down in Jacksonville and one of my friend's friends was out at dinner with us. I don't know exactly where he lives but definitely in the Ft. Caroline area... We actually got on the subject because my friend was complaining that he couldn't get it yet... His opinions were on-par with mine for the most part though he was happier with his Comcast internet than I was with TWC.
-Overall, the channel selection is superior in both of our opinions (I live in Raleigh, NC) for both HD and SD.
-The Internet appears more constant and faster overall though latency is slightly higher. I don't know how he felt about the latency situation but I personally don't see any real issues. I get around 58ms when I ping google.com.
-The price vs features is definitely much better, we both agreed on this point. With the U300 package (if you want that package, sign up for the U200 and then upgrade, it will save you a months difference between the two. Same with internet, chose a slightly lower speed and upgrade after install, you will get an additional $20 back
-The DVR (if you order HD at time of install) holds quite a bit more content than either Comcast or TWC.
-The Total Home DVR functionality is just something cable doesn't have, but this only matters if you are using more than 1 TV.
-He mentioned liking the call log thing, I have VoicePulse and not U-Verse phone so I don't really have much experience with that.
I could tell a slight difference in the HD quality at first with certain programs but I don't really see it anymore. I can say that SD looks exponentially better on my 52" Sony than it ever has with cable. I don't like watching a lot in SD but sometimes it's the only option. Also, you can record up to 4 shows at one time (2HD, 2SD) (for most at least, I guess this depends on how far you are from the VRAD) which is helpful when most of the shows you watch seem to come on at the same time/same night.
And a point we didn't talk about but I have noticed is that U-Verse is adding more little features all the time. You can watch 4 different news stations at a time (which is actually neater than you would think, especially if you want to see what's going on in the world and the weather at the same tiem). You can view pictures from your network or even from flickr with the U-Verse box. Honestly, there are so many little widgets and functions and I can't really think of them at the moment. The point is that AT&T is making use of available technology with U-Verse, something few cable companies have really bothered doing.
Good luck! In regards to support... My experience has been excellent so far! I contacted Tier 1 tech support over chat once and they resolved my issue without every having to speak with me on the phone. Another small isssue I had was quickly resolved after emailing the Tier 2 guys that frequent this forum, they offered to have someone out next day.
It's not all hype, it's a solid service and I think it will continue to grow as times change... |

gdmPremium,MVM join:2001-06-15 Mchenry, IL kudos:3 | reply to chrisbjax Sorry I don't buy that at all. Maybe when it was bellsouth but AFIAK AT&T does not sub contract especially for POTS. |
|
 | Not Bellsouth either. I had Bellsouth FastAccess DSL for years prior to the buyout. I never once had a contractor out to look at my POTS or DSL. Now maybe in the years before DSL self-installs when microfiilters weren't available and a filter had to be installed at the NID. They might have used contractors then but that was years ago.
The only telecommunications company I know that actively uses contractors is DirecTV. The cable companies might, but I've never seen one. |

chrisbjaxPremium join:2008-03-11 Jacksonville, FL | reply to gdm You guys are right, I don't know who showed up at my own house for support on my DSL.. Which is probably why they lost me as a customer..
I don't know where you guys live, or how AT&T handles it in your area, but i'm telling you, in JAX, FL the guys badge read AT&T Contractor, and he drove up in a POV. (Not a AT&T truck/van)
Now, if you guys are done calling me a liar, i'd like to have my thread back please.

| Maybe it was an AT&T Contractor (not an independent contractor but one who works at AT&T and is on a contract)? Who knows really...
Chris, what are you opinions on day 2? Which box did you get, the IPN4320? If so, this box can hold a lot of HD!! |
|
chrisbjaxPremium join:2008-03-11 Jacksonville, FL | I have 1 IPN4320 and 1 IPN330HD. I went ahead and upgraded to the HD, because I got the LG 47LH90 on sale at SEARS on Sat. for $1399.00
As for opinions, I really like the TV. The service is far superior then Comcast. The internet is really fast, but it appears that if I change my DNS to OpenDNS, I lose a lot of my speed. Not sure if their is a correlation there, but until I see something conclusive indicating such, I'll simply keep it set to AT&T DNS for now.
I have had a few issues with the phone, mainly that since it was installed, my phone hasn't worked. It appears their may be an outage because the widgets are also unavailable via the website, yet the RG shows it as up.. So, I don't really have any opinions of the phone yet.
Being that this is brand new in my area, I fully expect some bugs, until everything is ironed out. |

| Just curious, where are you putting the OpenDNS settings? I think I read that there is an issue with putting them in RG directly (maybe a sticky at the top of this forum or it might have been in a post... I could even be making that up in my head, who really knows?;))
As for the voice, if it continues to be an issue, definitely contact support. If you are paying for it, you should be getting it. |

chrisbjaxPremium join:2008-03-11 Jacksonville, FL | I had entered the settings on my dual-homed server. (I was using it for DHCP)
I have a tech coming back out tomorrow morning, to look at the phone, and at my internet. I have 18MB service, yet on speedtest, im only seeing 6-8MB.
I would accept anything above 15MB, but there is a pretty huge difference between 18MB and 6-8MB.
Regardless, I took my server out of the equation completely, and I'm only using the RG for everything right now, and I'm still seeing issues. |

gdmPremium,MVM join:2001-06-15 Mchenry, IL kudos:3 | What OS are you running? If you haven't I talk to Matt. Maybe have him lower you to 12 or 6 to see what happens & then increase to 18. |

| reply to chrisbjax I had a somewhat similar issue when I upgraded from the 12 to the 18... I used the tech chat thing on the U-verse support page (not exactly sure how I found it) and the representative did some stuff to my RG and reset it... afterwards, everything seemed to work really well. Hopefully the tech visit will resolve everything!
If not, I would definitely talk to one of the Tier2 techs and see what they can do. They are quick to respond and really quick to get your issue resolved. I am actually impressed with how well AT&T is supporting this service (currently at least, time will tell how long they continue to do so).
Have you tried the tweak test tool here on dslreports? It can help you determine if there is a setting that needs to be changed, etc... |
|
KeowayPremium join:2009-08-29 Seneca, SC | I second the recommendation to perform a Tweak test, especially if one is running XP. I adjusted my MTU to 1500.
In recent months, my VPN client had become somewhat flaky and unstable with ADSL. It now appears to have returned to rock solid reliability and my VDSL speedtests are typically ranging somewhere between 9.5M and +11.5M for my 12M service tier. [My max rate to the VRAD is 55M and my loop length is under 2K.]
Nota Bene: My U-Verse install was on Thursday, so I am reporting very early results for my experiences with the product; however, I am very pleased. I had been a FastAccess customer for more 8 years. First at the original 1.5M speed and subsequent upgrades to 3M and 6M. My original Alcatel Speed Touch Home modem was a stalwart of reliability for the whole period. It never lost synch with the DSLAM, so the 2Wire box has its work cut out for it |

chrisbjaxPremium join:2008-03-11 Jacksonville, FL | reply to gdm I have a smorgasboard of OS's in my house.
I run Windows 7 RC on my laptop. 2003 STD on my fileserver. XP PRO SP3 on my wifes laptop and Vista Ultimate on my gaming system.
Keith the Tech resolved the issue. Apparently, he has an awesome magic wand! The only thing he did was replace the jacks in the NID. That fixed everything. took the snow off my phone, and brought my speed up to 17.9MB-down, 1.7MB-up. (Now my wife will stop cursing me.. yeah!) Thanks guys! |
