One in three Harris Co. adults uninsured, Census report says
Harris County's overall uninsured rate of 26.9 percent was the seventh-highest among Texas' 50 most populous counties, according to data from the American Community Survey. The state uninsured rate was 24 percent, compared with the national rate of 15 percent.

IMO, the fact that Harris County has a hispanic population of about 39% would have a large impact on the 26.9% uninsured. The 39% is not broken down to being legal or illegal.

quote:
The latest numbers to tally Houston's journey of growth and diversification came Monday in estimates from the American Community Survey, a U.S. Census snapshot for 2008. They show whites, who made up 63 percent of Harris County's population in 1980, now are just 36 percent of the population.

Hispanics in Harris County are just over 39 percent, blacks are nearly 18 percent and Asians are just under 6 percent. The numbers are even more dramatic for Houston proper: Hispanics are 42.7 percent, whites are 27.4 percent, blacks 23.4 and Asians 5.4 percent.

What really makes this interesting to me is the demographics at Houston ISD:
said by »www.houstonisd.org/HISDConnectDS···7fa6RCRD :
In February 2009, Houston ISD reported a total enrollment of 200,225:
* 122,278 (61.1%) were Hispanic American
* 55,582 (27.8%) were African-American
* 15,707 (7.8%) were Anglo American
* 6,501 (3.2%) were Asian American
* 157 (.1%) were Native American
Granted, this isn't scientific in the least due to the amount of public school districts and private schools in the Greater Houston area, but it does paint an interesting picture on what the city might be like in the next couple of decades. I wonder what the insurance statistics will look like as the first generation of the immigrants' children make it through our public schools.

Did anyone here, in this forum (where you posted this poll) blame the government? Please don't put words in anybody's mouth.

well, if a person can not afford the cost of expensive health insurance, then it looks like it will just be a bill and maybe a paupers grave.

no matter how essential health insurance is, if you can not afford it, there is nothing you can do. do you skip buying food for the kids and skip paying the rent to pay the insurance? you can be homeless and hungry but have that expensive health insurance.

Most people who don't have insurance will go to the emergency room for treatment. Hospitals have to treat them. When they leave, the bill stays with the hospital because they have no intention of paying it.

Maybe a better question would be "How many people are under-insured?". Because of the insurance companies refusing to insure people with pre-existing conditions and outrageous deductibles, most people (even with insurance) would go broke if they were hit with a serious disease or injury. I've got/had kidney stones, gout, sleep apnia, and an injured back from being hit by a drunk driver. Luckily, I'm in pretty good health for an old man. I just can't afford to get sick.

If I do get sick enough to have to go to the emergency room I have a fake ICE outfit to wear that should scare about 75% of the people in the waiting room enough to leave. At least I won't have to wait as long . . .

1/3 is 33.3%, not 26.9.

And yes, the link was pretty rad.
