Re: OOL connected but very slow to not working internet

Chaz70, you and I are in the same town (and zip) and have the same exact problem. I've noticed my issue will show normal download speeds (even though browsing is SLOOOOOOOW), but crawling upload speeds. It usually takes forever just to start the upload test, if it even works at all.

I've had techs here time and time again. They never see the issue. It's always working fine when they're here.

My street doesn't have FiOS either

I'm actually having the same problem in 07444 Pompton Plains. I can barely reach websites from the evening to early morning. Most of the time they just time out. The modem will also keep blinking trying to establish a connection. I replaced the coax wire and did have some moderate success, but it still seems to be happening.

I have a brother in Metuchen who has ZERO problems with OOL. We are both what you might call "power users" (?) Always downloading uploading, multiple xboxs, Wii, PS3 online games, remote desktop, FTP, news groups, streaming media.... The internet and broadband has become a huge part of life for us as much as TV or anything else.

Our experiences with OOL are exact opposites. He has NO TROUBLE. Always up and running full speed. Me, horrible horrible service, very random, slow to no service for well over a year.

So I made the move to DSL cause thats all I can get here. Plus I had it before and I know it worked well. Yeah its less than 1/4 the speed of OOL, but if it works reliably I'll live with the cut in speed. 7.x DSL isnt too bad anyway..

Right now Verizon is having a special and 6 months of internet is free for a 1 yr agreement... I went for it.

The kicker to me is still the fact that Verizon can install and have my services running before OOL could agree to have a tech here at my house. How could they drop the ball that badly !?!?

To be fair I'm posting this. What is going on so far.

OOLTech owned up in the direct forum and said that my area was suffering from a problem and they were working on it. Now why phone support couldn't admit to this i have no idea. Why put people through the stress of a 2 week away service call instead of saying we know our network is broke, sorry wait it out? Is it to steer people away from demanding a refund by making them think something is wrong at the home?

Anyway, Over the weekend (late Sat night) Everything seemed to be working again at full speed. Its only been a little more than a day so I'm still not convinced everything will be fine. But we will see. If anything goes wrong again I will post it here.

I cancelled my Verizon order. I dont want DSL. I do want working internet. Im crossing my fingers that OOL has solved this problem. Again if I was wrong to cancel I'll post tothis thread again.

Sure enough, 2 days later I am unable to connect via remote desktop to my home computer.

A call to my wife at home, and she tells me the internet isnt working again.

Suprised? Not at all. It is so frustrating to know nothing is being done about it. I'm basicaly waiting for the service call on the 5th to be told they cant find out whats wrong / or being told its working fine right at this moment....

Horrible, Horrible service.

Chaz70,
I am sorry to hear your having problems with OOL, I been having very slow dl speeds for over 3 weeks and it happens after ppl come home from work around 5:30pm till 12:00 mid night, I have the 15/2 plan I've been getting around 2/2.10 and 8/2, after 1:00am I get great speeds 1560/2.10, I had the techs at my house 4 times, the first time they switched out my moto SBV4200 for a WebStar DPX2203 and changed all the coax fittings which did not help much, one of the techs told me it's a frequency issue, he told me that they are working on this problem and to give it a week or so, I really hate to switch to FIOS cause Cablevision has features that FIOS don't have, you might want to try calling the Disconnect dept. at 800-918-2581
or Cablevision Corp. office 516-803-2300 / James Dolan, president/CEO
voice: 516-803-1002 e-mail: jdolan@cablevision.com
I hope this helps.

Thank you. I have sent an email to Mr. Dolan. I really do hope to get this all resolved.

I had to use my hotmail account from a computer at work to email him. With my luck hotmail is filtered and it will never get to him.

The hops that time out completely are set not to respond to a tracert (a packet with a ttl of zero) and therefore will not respond in a trace. That really is not indicative of a problem.

The first trace showed no problems. The second trace did show 2 packets lost. Whether the problem was at the hops that did not respond or prior to those hops would require more traces. This can be done as UnnDunn See Profile suggested by setting up a line monitor or with one of the utilities I suggested.

Still looking at the traces you posted neither would be consistent with the Internet not working. Since your problem is the Internet stops working, and a problem has been confirmed in the Direct Forum, I think that at this point the traces will not help as much as initially. Since they confirmed a problem in the Direct Forum I would think the problem is somewhat local to your area.

Thanks TheWiseGuy. One of the techs that came to the house said he was going to ask his boss to have the line monitored, but of course I never heard anything from them again after that.

After rereading your last post I thought you meant today one of the techs said he would have his boss monitor it but now realize it has to be a tech in the past.

When the tech does come out definitely get his supervisors number and call the supervisor directly. I think you will feel differently after talking to him.

said by Chaz70 See Profile :

No techs left any supervisor number.

You are so very wrong. The supervisor in my area will NOT get to the bottom of it and I will have to wait 10 days.

No one has called me... no one has replied to my post on the direct forum, nothing is being done and on Nov 5th they will come and tell me again they dont know what it is.

Cablevision has horrible service. I have zero confidence in them to resolve this issue.

No fios on my steet, so I will be stuck with crap DSL, but at least it will work when I want to check my email.
Your saying that there was absolutely no available techs till today? I find that VERY hard to believe.

Also if you haven't spoke to the supervisor how could he say he wouldn't take care of the problem? Each time you call customer service starts you back at the beginning of the process. They go through their "procedure" on the phone then send out a tech, and I NEVER heard of it taking 10 days to get an appointment on a weds. Most of the time if you are even just a little upset they go crazy getting someone out THE SAME DAY.

What happened today when the tech was there? Was he the one that said he will have his boss set up a monitor? If so, you won't hear anything till after he sets up the monitor and watches it for a while. If the tech brought it back today the supervisor may not even see his work order until tomorrow.

Cablevision service is a joke. You might think this supervisor is a great guy....whatever I've been calling for months and months with no solution. Why should I have to call or do anything special for working service. His guys have been here over and over again. NOTHING was done.

The traces take different paths. OOL has routers that for everyone time out because they are set not to respond to a ttl=0. These normally are somewhere between hops 3-7. Here is my typical trace.

Yeah. At work here some times I get a request timed out at a hop or 2 but trace it again and it shows. I think it is local network being busy.

Direct support said the hops showed a possible problem in my local area....

A tracert from work to a site will pass through very different pieces of equipment then a tracert from home to the same site. That is why it helps to figure out where the problem is occurring. Each piece of equipment can be configured differently. When you get 3 asterisks(time outs) consistently from a hop but the hops after it tend to respond, it almost always means the equipment forwarding the packet is configured not to respond to a trace.

A good read on traces, how they work and what they mean can be found at the link below.

Service started working at around 4:00pm. Of course because the service guy shows up at 5pm , right?

Anyway, very nice guy, but again, nothing done. He is gonna "watch" the modem. (He did replace my webstar with a Moto)

Turns out the area supervisor was here a few service calls ago. He is a "good guy" and did more than any other service guy that was here. (replaced wire and ends and the like). I was left his number this time so I can get in touch with him if I wish to pursue being an OOL customer going forward.

Bottom line nothing is being done. And it will be up to me to call and make issue every time the service is at fault. All to end up at the same place. Horrible, Horrible service.

So, the DSL order is back in with Verizon, my local phone service is already switched. Slower but it will work all the time. That is what I need above all else.

Cablevisions inability to have its departments work together to solve customer problems has lost them this customer. When and if Fios comes down my street, they will loose a TV customer also. If I dont order direct TV anyway just to be free of them....
