In its statement today, the company noted that unencumbered spectrum was sold for many billions more than the spectrum Verizon bought.
For the F.C.C. to now place such requirements on that spectrum so soon after the auction creates the impression of a bait and switch, and could raise questions about the fairness and integrity of the auction process itself.
The C.T.I.A., the wireless trade group, also raised significant reservations about the new rules. It said: The commission is considering changing the rules after the auction impacting companies confidence in the auction process just as carriers are facing a brewing spectrum crisis. AT&T has a point. They paid much more for wireless spectrum that was SUPPOSED TO BE unencumbered by restrictive regulations and now the FCC is trying to change the rules midstream. I think they should get a rebate on their wireless leases. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

It's a bitch to buy into something and all of a sudden have the "company" just change things up on a whim at their discretion to better serve themselves.
What ever gave them the impression that their business was immune to government intervention to begin with? Oh that's right... their lobbyists and the millions they spend on them and the bought politicians. Let them drink some of their own kool-aid now.

Unencumber the consumer, be unencumbered by the FCC?
|
| | Or they could give their spectrum back and chop it up as a loss. Kind of like an ETF on their lease. | |

If it's a real political hot potato then AT&T could find themselves in some major trouble almost overnight...
Would there be political fallout over that? Sure, but it could be spun. Don't forget that Obama still has the MSM and a significant number of liberal extremists drinking his patented flavor of Kool Aid. He'd simply tout that it's the "change" that's right for America and many would believe him. Heck, he essentially took over GM and tried to shut down car dealerships based upon whose politics the owners supported, and nobody really even blinked. -- It's simple: Obama is lying about health care. His plans require rationing, and openly fund abortions and euthanization. And his continued association with ACORN only shows that he supports its illegal and immoral activities. Remove Obama from office now.

Sorry, that's just so funny... I dunno, being unencumbered is one thing, screwing your customers is another thing.

1 edit | I have a hard time feeling too sorry for them. When the Telecom Act of 1996 was gutted, and all those telecom.com companies that were in middle of building out networks based on the regulatory landscape of TA1996 were destroyed virtually overnight, you didn't see a peep out of AT&T about how unfair it was to these companies very ability to exist, more or less make any profits.
Yes, the regulatory landscape can change. In fact AT&T and all are usually a driving force behind the changes. As long as the changes go their way, they they are happy clams.... but if something doesn't go their way, listen to them howl. Yes, it may mean they can't monopolize as heavily as they wanted too. Too bad. They'll still make billions. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini
