 | Samsung LN-T4065F problems This 40'' lcd 1st started giving me problems a couple months ago when I would turn it on it would go on and off by itself several times and then I would get a screen of bright colored vertical lines untill I powered it off and back on and sometimes it would do the same thing and sometimes go to my normal video...now however it won't give any video, just a blue screen with the source letters doubled...try a DVD and it plays but it looks scrambled (2 video's playing all together) hard to explain but I know it is really messed up...tried to unplug for 24 hours several times but didn't help...any one have this problem before? It's 2 1/2 yrs old and no warranty... Thanks in advance. |

1 edit | Well, the fact that it's scrambled on the "no signal" source screen means you can pretty much rule out a bad cable.
I'd open it up and check all the electrolytic capacitors for bulged/leaking capacitors. It's a fairly common problem and can lead to weird things happening once they go bad enough. If that is the problem, then the fix is rather easy: replace the caps. |

 | reply to Whiskers Thanks for the reply...I have read that the power supply has 5 caps that are 10 volts and they should be changed to 16 volts...would that cause my trouble? Thanks again. |

1 edit | If the caps are underrated or bordeline, yes, they can fail prematurely. Again, they will probably have leaked or bulged.
Open up the monitor and perform a visual inspection of the capacitors. If any of them appear to have bulged or leaked, replace ALL of the caps in the low voltage side of the power supply. |
|
 | I'm gonna open it up today and check it out...i'll let you know. Thanks |
|
 | Well, I opened it up and don't see anything unusual...all the caps look good (no leaking or bulging caps) so, maybe I should change the caps on the power supply and hope that fixes it? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated....
Thanks |

Since you already have pictures, you can ignore that part. -- Striving for Parfection. |

 | OK, I think i've got a couple pictures to upload of my power supply....the 4 caps that I have circled are the 10 volt ones that I read should be changed to 16 volts..also, they have slightly raised tops (might mean nothing but I thought I'd let you know)... Thanks for trying to help me thru this..... |

Perhaps someone with more relevant experience on this set will chime in. -- Striving for Parfection. |

I'm going to change them this weekend if Radio Shack has them but usually I go there for something they don't know what I'm talking about (school kids)... no where else in the Hazard Ky. area that I know about that would have them.... Wish me luck, the ol' lady wants her TV back...hahaha.. Thanks very much 3SGTE...appreciate it. |

1 edit | reply to Whiskers Those caps are definitely toast. The metal top should be perfectly flat.
Replacing them with 16V isn't a bad idea.
Also important is that the replacement capacitors are low-ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). General purpose capacitors generally don't work so good in switchmode power supplies, and won't last as long.
It's unlikely Radio Shack will carry the correct capacitors, their selection is very limited.
You'll probably have to purchase the caps from an electronics parts supplier such as Digikey or Mouser (online) or a local electronics parts supplier if available in your area.
For good measure I'd replace all the caps in that section of the power supply. They're cheap (usually less than $1 per cap), and you don't know what state the other caps are in. Even though visually ok, they may have deteriorated a little. |

Also I should point out that is most likely a multilayer board, So solider with care. |

 | reply to kdpo1990 I had to order new caps off the internet so it will probably be middle of the week before I get them... I'll be sure and post my results in case someone else has the same issues.......Thanks |

 | reply to Whiskers When soldering, always remember it's 'heat' not 'pressure' that reflows your solder, enabling removal of the bad caps.
Good luck and update us on if it works! |

 | reply to Whiskers I have a Samsung LN-T4065F for about 3 years now and it is doing the exact same thing. It take 3 times for it to come on. Please post whether or not replacing the caps worked. I am would definitely like to know. Since Samsung has not done anything about this problem and has no plans to do anything they have definitely lost my business in my next television purchase. |

 | reply to Whiskers I have the same issue. I've gone to stores looking for the capacitors with no luck, the print on mine is V2A, 1000uf, 10 V. I do not know much at all about electronics and was wondering if this would be the correct one to purchase on-line..."Capacitor, Al Electrolytic; 1000uF; 16VDC; +/-20%; Radial; 10.0mmDia.; 20.0mmL; 20VDC;". What range would be considered a low-ESR? I read that 16V would be a safe replacement. Thank you! |
