Some of the so-called "essentials" made me laugh!

Hell, you could easily spend double/triple what the basic unit costs in the first place...and $40 to change the color??? Basic black looks better 'n better! :o
--

P.S. Not that HP does not do the same thing! It's just that a netbook is meant to be an ultra-portable, inexpensive alternative...start jacking the price up, and you'd be better off with a full-powered thin and light laptop.
Deeds, not words

PeteC2 posted : A matter of taste, of course, but I am no fan of glossy screens, especially for netbooks.

The very premise of ultra-portability to me suggests that most will use netbooks in varied lighting environments...particularly outdoors. The small amount of color/blacks that glossy screns provide are more than countered by the glare rersistance of matte screens.

I ue my netbook out on my deck quite often, where I used to lug my notebook with it's glossy screen. The netbook's matte screen is much nicer to deal with out there.
--
Deeds, not words

PeteC2 posted : $345 works better for me. This is strictly my "take" on netbooks, mind you, but the closer you get to $300 the better. The best advantage of the ASUS, IMHO is the great battery run time these boast, although I doubt you will actually come close to what they claim in real usage, however, I see many folks claiming a real-world use of a solid 7 hours, which is awesome! My HP netbook with the 6 cell battery is more on the order of 5 - 5.5 hours, so that is really good!

Do you really "need" 2gb? Not so much if you stick with the supplied Windows XP that it comes with. That is more the limitations of XP than anything else. I am running 2gb, since I had it lying around anyways, but I see no performance boost at all. If you opt to go to Win 7 in the future, the 2gb will then be a very real benefit (I may or may not go this route)
--
Deeds, not words

fartness posted : ZipZoomFly had the cheaper of the two netbooks for $345 with a $20 MIR, so it ended up being $325 after rebate.
