4 edits | Linksys BEFSX41 v1 router locking up?
Hello!
So far today, my old Linksys BEFSX41 v1 router locked/freeze up twice. When that happened, I could no longer surf the Web and lost connection to the Internet. Basically, pinging and connecting to router (192.168.0.1 -- wanted to see its logs; same for Ambit cable modem's 192.168.100.1) no longer responded. HOWEVER, LAN still worked (can access my other computers). The only way to fix this problem was to pull its power plug from the rear and replug it.
It started and happened this early morning and just a few minutes ago. I was surfing the Web and streaming YouTube videos. I upgraded to the latest firmware (1.52.16) about nine days ago (9/13/2009). I did not have this problem before today with older and the latest firmwares.
Has anyone seen/heard/experienced this problem? I wonder if my router is dying? Or maybe a bad latest firmware (if it was bad, wouldn't I had experienced this problem way earlier after the upgrade?)? I don't think it is temperature related since it was not during peak heat temperatures (can go up to almost 90F degrees).
Thank you in advance. |

| I would reflash it again with the latest firmware. Some thing could have got corrupted. If you show the same results after doing that. Flash back to the older firmware. Then if you still have issues. It is likely the router finally kicking the bucket. |

| For sure. I always reset back to defaults before and after flash. Also make sure you are not updating with the internet port in use. You would be amazed how many people try to flash routers with the internet connected. |

I will try resetting settings back to default and reconfigure from scratch on the weekend if the problem occurs. I don't like fiddling with them now (tired too). -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. Use the forum! | reply to antdude A follow-up...
Weird. I haven't had any new lockup or any other incidents so far since my original post on 9/22/2009. I wonder what happened that day. I haven't touched the router settings (e.g., reset to factory settings and reconfigure from scratch) either!
Maybe I have spoken too soon? -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. Use the forum! Disclaimer: The views expressed in this posting are mine, and do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer |

3 edits | reply to antdude Crap, it happened again a few minutes ago (was watching Flash videos ten minutes before it too) and it's Monday (don't have time to reset and reconfigure from scratch). So that uptime was about 13 days.
I think I saw a slight Internet slowdown right before the router froze. |

| Maybe time for a new router? It is an inexpensive device, so once it is over 5 years old it really does not pay to invest much time in it. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

Haven't had time to reset its datas. It's probably my configurations or firmware since the issue started happening after the upgrade. -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. 1 edit | reply to antdude Had another one at about 8:12 AM PDT. I noticed a brief lag online a few minutes before it. I should check the logs when I notice any lags. This is definitely not related to streaming Flash videos since I wasn't watching any and haven't for a few minutes. Also, not related to my new port forwarding settings for IM services.
Still need to find time to reset the firmware settings and reconfigure from scratch. -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. Use the forum! I am going to try resetting my latest firmware settings first and reconfigure from scratch. If not, then I will go downgrade (still need to find and download the firmware, and Linksys doesn't have archives!) with the one that had no problems (version before the latest). It seems like no one else had these problems so far. -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. Use the forum! | reply to antdude Had another one earlier. I seem to notice another pattern. I think it only happens when I am heavily using the Web on my updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 (IE6) machine, in loading many tabs in Mozilla's SeaMonkey v1.1.18. And this is usually after I haven't used the Internet a lot from heavy usage for a while. I don't seem to see this when I use my older box with Debian/Linux with the same Web browser. I also don't see this when downloading heavily (peak speeds) with downloaders.
I am planning to do my router's settings reset next weekend when I have more free time and when less people are using the network in case something goes wrong or whatever, and I don't get complaints. -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. | reply to antdude A little status update...
It has been over 20 days of no new lockups. Either I am having good luck (not declaring fixed/resolved yet) or I fixed it(?). Funny thing is that I did not reset my settings or downgrade! The only thing I changed was to enable MTU size to 1500. -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. Use the forum! | reply to antdude "Game over, man!" RIP!
Last night, my fast Internet got slower and slower after 10:00 PM PST. I thought it my ISP's problem, but then I noticed I was losing packets between my router and 192.168.100.1 (Ambit/Ubee U10C018 cable modem). Also, loading Web pages from internal cable modem was slow and sometimes got stuck! Router's Web pages were fast though.
I tried another CAT5 cable and a shorter length, but same problem. Powering cycling both router and modem didn't help. I decided to pull my old Netgear RT311 router (likes to disconnect every 12-15 hours but I kept it for emergencies like this!) and that was fast and working.
I retried Linksys router. I tried setting back to defaults, downgrading firmware that was fine in the past, etc. All same symptoms! So I unplugged its power and moved to another strip, and noticed my switch's network jack lights going on and off as if they were lose or something disconnecting and reconnecting. Wiggling cables including power did no help. I assume this was the endgame since nothing helped and got worse.
Time for me to buy a new router (WRT54G) since I don't want to use Netgear one due to it disconnecting every 12-15 hours. I think I will get a WR54G due to all the positive comments, but I don't see any on sales in »www.salescircular.com/ca/compute···np.shtml ... -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net.
